Hey there! Another weekly challenge

inspired post for Collab day.

To make this a collaborative effort, I asked one of my teammates to suggest an object from their life for me to write about. Sunny’s suggested object is an antique locket with a picture of a boy and a cat.

This was really fun to write, I hope you enjoy it.

Not the actual locket, just an edit I made. ^^

The locket’s history started as an idea in the mind of a young German gentleman agonizing over a special gift for his eldest sister.

Jasmin was newly married, and the couple had just announced that they were expecting their first child. Klaus had no desire to be father, nor to marry a woman, but was ecstatic at the prospect of being an uncle. He’d been pacing the width of his small office all evening, unable to make up his mind about a gift. As much as he thought something for the baby would be appropriate, he knew mother and child’s needs would be more than met, and his thoughts kept returning to something special for Jasmin instead.

Klaus was startled out of his musings by a knock on his office door; an errand boy from a shop down the street come to deliver a watch he’d had repaired. As he stepped back over to his desk a genuine idea popped into his mind. An heirloom. His family really didn’t have any, at least not that he was aware of, and wouldn’t it be nice to give something his sister might wish to give to her child someday? What though? A watch? He couldn’t imagine Jasmin wearing one, she’d never been prone to wearing bracelets or rings. When she was younger she’d lost or ruined several trinkets through taking them off and forgetting them, or hopelessly coving them with clay while pursing her ion for pottery. A necklace then! An excellent compromise. Not the best gift if the couple only had a boy, but something Jasmin would love. Also something a boy could eventually give a child of his own someday.

Not wishing to waste any time Klaus grabbed his coat and hurried out of the small office building. There was a jeweler a few streets over that should still be open for a while longer that evening. He caught a coach to save some time, and was soon stepping into the pretty little shop he’d only visited once or twice before. It was small and more eclectic than some of the other jewelers in the city, but was reputed to be one of the best places for unique or custom items.

It was one of his most memorable moments seeing Jasmin’s face light up when she opened the little box containing the locket. It was gold, with delicate tool work designs on the outside, and a place in each half for a picture on the inside. The jeweler had gotten it exactly as Klaus had envisioned, and the way his sister looked at it made all the worry over just the right gift well worth it. She was already telling her husband they should have a portrait made of their newborn son someday soon to put inside for her. Klaus found himself hoping that it would find its way down through generations, maybe even staying in the family line.

Neither Klaus nor his sister could have imagined the journey that locket would go on over the generations. It’s next steps had been to one of Jasmin’s two daughters, then to her only grandson. With him the locket traveled to several other countries, and was eventually ed to his fiancé when he went away to war and then lost somewhere along the way.
