I started with this terrible rough sketch of how he'd look (on paper). Just the basic arm movements and where the table would be, etc.

The outline on my laptop looked much better afterwards, because I made more hair strands with a bigger grin:

The base colours were next, I used the eyedrop effect to gather the palette and shading of a random Deku reference:

Then I added the shading and highlights. Once again, 'add' effect for lighting and airbrush for shading:

Background is random splatter-paint and fluffy watercolor effects in different shades of blue. A white border was placed around Deku, cos that's just my style:
