Everyone I knew told me once or twice
To be afraid of the monster beneath my bed,
For it will drag me down into the abyss,
And never shall I see the light of day again,
But I never once encountered this thing,
This so-called monster that's hiding under my bed,
Perhaps this is but a mere lie told to me,
So I stopped being afraid of this fairy tale,
And then another story came to me,
Of the dangerous creature in the woods at night,
A faceless being much like an eldritch god
Who would kidnap people and take away their souls,
I would have believed this tale told to me
If it were not for the fact I visit the woods
Every time I need to clear away my thoughts
That has been plaguing my mind for such a long time,
And I encountered no such elder god,
No beast nor being that could have done me great harm,
Alas, another story filled with nonsense,
So I stopped listening to their warnings and all,
They warn me of all things unnatural,
Of fantastical creatures and fictitious beasts,
Yet none of them warned of the true evil
That resides in the mind and heart of mortal men,
The lies, deceptions, all things horrific—
Not a single soul warned me about all of this,
Every outstretched hand is but a hidden trap,
Waiting to seize the moment when I'm at weakest,
They are the real monsters to look out for,
Not the ones beneath beds, nor the forest dwellers,
For they have been kind to me, and to my mind;
They protect me from the real monsters in disguise.
