"Alright, alright, it's that time again guys, the time where I sign off!" She turned up the radio. This had always been her favorite part, the part where the wide eyed dreamer in her came to life.
"Sorry to be leaving so soon, school has been keeping me in check about bedtimes, but anyways! Check your clocks because it is 11:11 PM, also known as Wish Time! Let's see who our caller today is!" The line clicked in ear, telling her the call had gone through. Her breath caught in her throat.
I really got it?
"Hey there, caller 6! Welcome to Wish Time, what've you got for us?" She could hardly speak. Everyone knew her to be the down to earth realist, the one who knew the world would eat you alive if you didn't face reality first.
"H-Hi." She stammered out.
He's just a classmate...
"Hey there, what's your name and what's your wish for tonight?"
He's so peppy. It'll get him killed one day.
"Sorry, hi, my name is Angela, but some people call me Angie." She picked up a name. There was no way she would tell him her real name, not with the expectations she had to meet.
"Angie, what grade are you in? Do your parents know you're awake this late?" She could clearly imagine him smiling that big stupid grin of his, the one that made adults melt and students feel safe. He was joking, she could sense that much.
"Of course, and I'm in the same grade as you are, 'Jacket'." She joked right back.
Two can play that game.
She found herself smiling. It had been a while since they had actually talked. Back when he... She stopped. The radio repeated the question.
"I wish things were how they used to be." She blurted. A hand covered her mouth and the phone dropped. Had she really said that aloud? And ON THE RADIO!? A small laugh played in her ears and she shook her head.
"Sounds like you have someone special on your mind. Let me play a song for you." She hung up and sat down, back pressing against the wall. This song. The one that always took her back to that moment.
"Care to dance?"
A small laugh as she stepped back. "I couldn't possibly."
"Aww, we could make this our song!" He was so positive. All. The. Time.
"Oh really? It's just a song, there's plenty like it." She took another step back. They hadn't even changed out of the ridiculous outfits from homecoming. At least, she felt ridiculous. The lace sleeves itched and the dress felt short, the bracelets on her wrist lightly tickled her arm, and ugh. The pain of looking presentable.
"Can't you loosen up, dream a little?" He'd asked.
"Why? I'm not like you, I do mind when I am disappointed." She had pointed out.
"Amelia..."
"Wake up, Lukas. This is the world we have. It'll eat you alive. Chew you up and spit you out because you're so busy with your head in the clouds! You can't see what you have to deal with!" She had never snapped like this before.
"I-I'm sorry. I didn't mean to lose control..." She had stepped further back.
"Hey, no worries. Besides, I know I can count on you to keep my feet grounded while I chase the clouds!" He had smiled again, so brightly. Carefree. Innocent. Naive. Gullible.
It will chew you up and spit you out. Hit you with the car, then back up over you. Kill you, then burn the body. It will go into overkill if you don't wake up.
The song continued on the radio. She closed her eyes and listened. For once, maybe she needed this.
"I wish..." She didn't finish.
Get a grip, you are a realist. Blunt honest truth only, cold hard facts, undeniable evidence. They expect you to stay strong. Keep them grounded. Live up to your expectations for once.
She sighed.
~Let's get the TV and the radio to play our tune again, it's bout time we got some memory of our version of events, there's no need to be ashamed, I will sing with you my friend, so come on, come on, come on....~
