Flight

It was an ability granted to those who had trapped souls in their past life, one who could be born with wings or magic to fly was given high names and ranks, depending on their ability.

Dicarius was one of those people, one who was blessed with wings and given the ability to fly. He and I had met countless times on the battle field, sharing exciting stories about our battles when we finished our fights. We saw each other occasionally, but him being the right arm of King Yemma, and me being a simple General of the fallen angles from Hell, I was constantly in battle in the outskirts of hell, fighting infernal spirits that came too close to our safe zone.

I was currently fighting a mid-class infernal spirit when I swung my sword at the beasts neck, putting a deep gash in the spirits neck. His claws waved around randomly as it struggled to attack, its life getting shorter by the second. My team was watching in amazement as  I dodges the attacks, keeping away from this particular spirits blood, for it was very acidic.

It wasn't long before the spirit ed out, the lack of blood from ts head weakening it. I approached the beasts neck, calling on my blades power and making the special metal turn a bright blue. I swung my sword down, piercing the head of the creature, and shattering right in between its eyes. The spirit turned into a think black smoke, dissipating into the wind of the battlefield. I let out a victory cry, my teammates cheering with me as they slayed the rest of the smaller infernal spirits.

"A very good job you did (Y\N), you used some of the moves I taught you as well." I heard a smooth voice behind me. I smirked, not turning as I spoke.

"Well yes, I did have a very good teacher to show me a few tips on mid-class spirits, I suppose I should thank him. Or...." I swept my foot under the man, but is wings gave him enough time to fly into the air, preventing him from tripping. I grunted in frustration, giving him that warning cost me a chance.

"Now that is just cruel."  Dicarius said with a smirk.

"And that's cheating, you know I don't have wings Dica." I addressed him with his cute nickname. He shook his head, a blush barley noticeable that grew on his neck, but the collar of his coat did well to hide it. He let out an exhausted sigh, patting me on the back before tuning his back on me to head to camp. My group finished cleaning their weapons, turning to face me, only to see the right arm of King Yemma standing in front of me.

"Alright, good job defending the fifth wave of infernal spirits! Return to base camp while General Yang's army will take on the next wave for today!" Dicarius shouted over my warriors, relief shone in their eyes as they silently thanked that the fighting was now taken care of for them. "As for you (y/n), I want you to clean up for tonight. The red eclipse party is tonight, and all Generals are asked to prove their strength with a high-tier spirit."

His tone was serious, and his yellow eyes held a bit of worry as he looked at me. He waited foe me to collect my thoughts and follow him, watching my ragged and torn outfit slowly fall apart in the wind. When returned to King Yemma's palace, the first thing I did was shower. It was always nice to feel clean after a long battle, and the guardians working there were kind enough to repair my old uniform while I was washing under the water. Next I had to for any fallen, send a letter to Yemma with all the souls that needed to be reincarnated, and finished my paperwork.

I let out a sigh of exhaustion when I finished. It was only a few more minutes before my presence was required at the party, and even though the covering of the red moon was a week ago, they still wanted to do a pesky test. I put on my normal uniform, slipping my hidden weapons inside my outfit. With each weapon, I felt more and more secure about this fight.

I imagined all five generals in battle last year. If one general got knocked down before they could bring down the beast, their position would be taken by their best warrior in their army. General Ying and Yang tended to be opposites of each other, both sibling trying to do the opposite of their blood relative. While General Ash and Frost used their armies to push the growing number of infernal spirits back and away from the safe place. I, General (y/n), was the last defense if any infernal spirits got too close to Yemma's palace, and that also made me closer to the king. She would usually take my army in emergency and leave me with Dicarius to defend the palace, and when me and the right arm of Yemma were together, we were an unstoppable force, both physically and mentally.

I wandered around the hallways, sensing the great flow of magic from the ancient creatures protecting the lands of hell from infernal spirits as we took our once a year celebration into action. I followed my nose to the reception, where the crowd immediately recognized me and let me enter. Looking around the bustling room with my (e/c) eyes, I spotted the right arm of Yemma standing all alone, his own yellow eyes glazed and in another world.

I wandered behind him, not even triggering his instincts as I came too close to the back of his head. Being behind someone gave a great gift of surprise, and being me, it was a great battle strategy. I closed the space between me and Dicarius, breathing on his ear as I prepared to poke him in the sides.

"You shouldn't let your guard down." I whispered in his ear. He gasped and shivered, but I jabbed my fingers into his sides before he could even react to my sudden presence. He let out a quiet shout before stepping of my grasp, turning around with lightning speed and grabbing my hands, pinning me to the wall. His eyes needed a second to examine me before he recognized me, but he didn't let me go. I giggled gently before cursing. "Well crap"

"You shouldn't scare me like that, not when I can catch you so easily, besides, who told you about my sides? That feels really weird." He confessed to me as he relaxed. I smiled, and I surrendered, raising my hands as best I could myself to prove I had no more plans to tease him.

"You looked distracted, and I took that opportunity to my advantage, besides,." I moved my face closer to his once again, making him hold his breath."Your fun to tease." I said, a blush forming on my cheeks as I noticed how close I was to him. Dicarius must have noticed just then too, because the blush on his neck returned as he let me go. We stood apart from each other, Dicarius clearing his throat as he looked through the crowd once more.

Yemma had her eyes glued on me and Dicarius as she walked up a stage set up for everyone to see, gesturing quietly for us to stand beside her and the other generals. Dica grabbed my hand and led us through the crowd that was now looking at the King of the underworld, not noticing or caring for the two of us as we scrambled on stage. As I ed the line of generals, Dicarius took his place beside King Yemma, his cold, hard glare fixed on his face as he looked professional in front of such a large crowd.

"Welcome all, to the red eclipse ceremony. I, King Yemma, am here today to watch my five Generals of the underworld, test their strength against a high-tier infernal spirit. Generals!" King Yemma turned to look at us, and we all straightened ourselves. Her eyes scanned us, looking for any signs of weakness. "Undoubtedly, some of you will be knocked out in this team fight, and your position won't be taken unless you cannot stay conscious the first thirty minutes, or you fail to live the battle."

I shivered under her glare, but disguised it as a slight nod as I understood what was soon to happen. Yemma led us through a hall, many people trailed behind us as we got closer and closer to the battle field. When we reached the open field, I felt that familiar strong presence of an infernal spirit, and my body went to an automatic fighting pose. Yemma took note of this, and her eyes sparkled with approval.

"I will allow the Generals to take five minutes to say anything they would like to anyone for this could most possibly be your last time you see anyone." Yemma spoke with a blank emotion, one that many fighters used when they tried to not show any weakness. The other Generals moved to the crowd, exchanging a few words as they said their possible last goodbyes. I stood and watched with no emotion, not noticing the right arm of king Yemma right being me. A pair of pointed claws dragged gently down my back, giving me the weirdest chill I've ever had in my life. With a small yelp, I turned around and backed up quickly.

"Dicarius I know you like revenge, but why now?" I laughed, relaxing as he too held in a chuckle.

"If this is our last goodbye, I would like to say good luck." He said with a smile. It was a bit disappointing, I guess I was hoping that he would have said more, but what did I expect? I thanked him, and was just about to walk away when he caught my hand. "W-wait! I have one more thing for you too."

Dicarius pulled out a necklace with a silver chain holding two black metallic feathers, coning to hold a yellow gem that looked like Dicarius's eyes. My eyes were sparkling as he reached around my neck to clip the necklace on. His gloved hands brushing my skin as he fixed up the necklace. I felt a blush creep up onto my cheeks, my eyes staring into his as he focused on the necklace. Once he was done, he took a step back, looking at my face to see how the necklace fit me. I smiled and caressed the metal with my hand, looking down at the beatiful necklace before talking.

"What made you get me this? You know I'll just break it during battles if I wear it." I said sadly.

"I made it myself, and the metal is a very rare and tough one, a metal that I use for any accessories in battle. It should last a lifetime before it had a chance of breaking. And as for the crystal, it can hold in a certain amount of magic, so if your ever hit by an infernal spirit, this necklace should absorb any magic to make the blast less deadly." Dicarius said with a slight smile. Seeing him smile was a rare gift, one I would trade anything for to see it.

"You didn't answer my one question, why did you give it to me?" I asked once more.

"That's a secret, that is, I'll tell you once the battle is over." He winked, whispering 'good luck' to me before stepping back even more to the crowd. Yemma made all the bystanders stand on a level higher then the actual battle was taking place, and guards from all armies stood watch and were ready to intervene if things got ugly. Yang approached me smoothly, brushing his hand through my hair.

"You're not going to make it far little bird, not when you rely on that right arm so much. He's grown soft around you, and it's made you weak." The general said in my ear. I snorted, catching him off guard.

"Just make sure to keep your eyes on the spirit, and not me." I said simply. The buzzer went off, and I watched as a heavy metal door with an ancient language was lifted from a dark hole. It didn't take the large infernal spirit to climb out of the hole, its nostrils flaring out as it scented prey. The massive creature was dark like normal infernal spirits, but like most mid-tier spirits, it had fire inside its chest and burning off a purple glow. Its eyes looked at all five of us before selecting Ash, the fire general for its first move. Moving its dragon-like body as fast as lightning, it landed a shallow hit on the general before the man could get out in time.

The general winced, and we all avoided the shots while making a plan. There was no way one of us could take it down alone, and no one was going to listen to my reasoning.

"Frost! You have to freeze it's limbs to the ground so it stops any fast movements with its limbs. As for you Yang! Do you think you and your sister can keep its eyes distracted? We want to immobilize this thing before it make any dangerous moves!" I shouted over the battle field. Frost, the ice General  was more obedient then her fellow generals, and began attempting to freeze the creatures limbs to the ground with solid ice. Yang refused to distract the spirit like asked, and decided to be irrational and try to hit the best with his sword. The general was quickly swiped away, with three large gashes leaking out of him. I shook my head, watching as a few of my soldiers expertly took his body off the field. I swiftly dodged another attack as Frost continued to build the ice further up the spirits legs.

Me and frost continued our plans, and for twenty five minutes, we were managing to keep every remaining general standing. Frost was almost done when the fire General let out a scream of pain, catching the ice mage off-guard. The spirit took notice of this, and used its head like a baseball bat to hit the Ice General across the field and into the crowd of onlookers before I could even say a word. Her scream was empty of air, and I knew she had broken a few bones from the cracking when she landed. The fire general was having seizures, his body shaking as he tried to vomit. The red painful wound was oozing, and I saw the poison leaking out of him.

After more people successfully took him off the field, it was only two generals left. Three new generals to deal with, this was going to be just fantastic.

The infernal spirit let out a screech, looking at Ying and me before snapping its jaws at us. It opened its wings, taking off into the air, breaking the now partially melted ice from its legs. I cursed, watching ad Ying took off after it. I could only watch, waiting for the creature to come down. It wasn't long before Ying came crashing down, my body burning as I ran to catch her. I did so successfully, but I felt my wrist pop slightly. I cursed as I set her down, letting the guards take her off the field. I unsheathed my sword, waiting for the spirit to come down.

I saw its eyes first, it came crashing down at full force. I didn't move, waiting to see if the creature was ready for a game of chicken. I moved out of the way of the spirit as it came crashing down, its body colliding into the ground. I felt a stab of pain in my thigh, but I kept running, desperate to get away from my attacker. The infernal spirit turned into a fog which immediately dissipated in the air. I let out a cry of victory, not noticing the multiple wounds on my body. When I saw my guards run at me with frightening speeds, I felt my body weaken.

"Dica..." I whimpered

I looked down to notice the many stab wounds caused by the infernal spirits poisons spikes, the fluid from the poison seeping into my body. I noticed that my bright yellow crystal was now black, instead of the bright yellow that looked like Dicarius eyes. I looked up one final time to see Dica running after me, taking me into his arms as my body went limp.

"Get her the antidote now! (y

), stay with me, don't fall asleep. my promise? I still have to tell you!" He was probably shouting, but all his words were lost as I drifted into a deep slumber.

When I awoke, I saw I was in bright white bed sheets. My eyes adjusted to the surroundings, my wounds healed. I wasn't alone, Dica was sleeping in a chair next to my bed, his head resting on my chest as he slept. My hand automatically slipped into his soft black hair, brushing through his hair as he gently awoke. When his yellow eyes opened, they were dazed, but when I stroked his hair again, his head shot up, and his eyes were wide as he stared at me.

"(y/n)..." He trailed off, cupping my cheek to make sure I was real. I leaned into his warm touch, savoring his presence. "It's really you, not some...dream."

I knew Dica too well, for I knew he wouldn't cry, but when one lone tear slipped from his eye, I couldn't help but feel guilt. I wiped his stray tear off his face, smiling at him.

"How have you been Dica?" I asked with a smile. He broke out into a weak smile himself, hugging me in relief"

It wasn't a short stay, I had been Unconscious for a week, and even with the sped healing, I was still weak when I begged to get out of the hospital. Dicarius would barley leave my side, and when he did, he would always come back after an hour minimum to check on me. I was so grateful for this man, one that only few could be  blessed to have seen his smile. It had been another week of me gaining energy at Dicarius's house, but now my body was itching to get out of the house.

"Dicarius, can we go somewhere?" I asked.

"Where would you like to possibly go?" He asked while reading through one of his fashion magazines.

"Somewhere where I haven't been, someplace that you can only go." I said imagining flying to a high up place. Dicarius smirked at me, watching as I walked out of the house in boredom. He set his magazine down, and hugged me from behind, placing his head on mine.

"I guess I can take you someplace, but it will involve a quick trip." Dicarius said ruffling his feathers. I looked at his with anticipation, not wanting to waste this moment. I broke the hug, staring at him with a smile.

"Then lets go!" I said with joy. He let out a sigh, lifting me up and using his wings to push off the ground. I felt adrenaline flow though me as he took off with me in his arms, the ground getting smaller. Dicarius gained speed and flew across the sky, not letting me slip from his arms one inch. When we made it to our destination, I was surprised I never noticed it.

It was a giant bio-luminescent tree that glowed a calming pink, it's bark a beautiful glowing blue. Glowing aqua water surrounded the tree as its roots popped in and out of the water. The best part was, the tree was suspended just before a cliff, so we had an amazing view of hell from here.

we landed on one of the roots, and I calmly sat next to Dicarius as he settled right against me, curling his dark wings behind us. I stared at the veiw, my breath taken away. Suddenly. a memory popped into my head. A promise.

"Hey Dicarius, didn't you promise why you got me this gift if a managed to win the battle?" I asked teasingly. The male stiffened, and he grew incredibly warmer.

"A-ah/ you see, I wanted to give you they gift while saying something about my feelings, but I nerver really....got too...." He trailed off, leaving m to piece the puzzle together. I blushed hard when I realized that he was trying to explain his feeling to me. but who knew that such a tough guy had such a difficulty with emotions.

"And what were these feelings?" I asked with a giggle. Dicarius was as red as a tomato, and I couldn't help but laugh. He sighed, looking straight into my eyes and cupping my cheek.

"I love you." He said with a burning ion in his eyes. I felt my face heat up even more, hearing those words come out of his mouth made my heart jump out of my shest, and forcing my lips to land on his. It was a soft kiss, one filled with an exchange of emotion that we both held within each other. We took a second to take a breather before connection out lips again, our emotions a mess spilt in the kiss. Dicarius pulled me closer to him, making me place my hands around his neck as he held my waist. When we separated, we were both breathless.

"I love you too." I said with a smile.
