“I've been hearing symphonies
Before all I heard was silence
A rhapsody for you and me
And every melody is timeless
Life was stringing me along
Then you came and you cut me loose
Was solo singing on my own
Now I can't find the key without you
And now your song is on repeat
And I'm dancin' on to your heartbeat
And when you're gone, I feel incomplete
So if you want the truth
I just wanna be part of your symphony
Will you hold me tight and not let go?
Symphony
Like a love song on the radio
Will you hold me tight and not let go?
I'm sorry if it's all too much
Every day you're here, I'm healing
And I was runnin' out of luck
I never thought I'd find this feeling
'Cause I've been hearing symphonies
Before all I heard was silence
A rhapsody for you and me
And every melody is timeless
And now your song is on repeat
And I'm dancin' on to your heartbeat
And when you're gone, I feel incomplete
So if you want the truth
I just wanna be part of your symphony
Will you hold me tight and not let go?
Like a love song on the radio
Will you hold me tight and not let go?”

“Symphony” by Clean Bandit speaks to me a lot, and it has for the past couple of months. I discovered it while filming back in February of 2019. In the music video, another story is being told. A story of two young men, hopelessly in love with each other. One day, on a bike ride back home, one of these men gets hit by a truck going across the street. This strike instantly kills him. Once his lover finds out about this loss, he loses it. He’s lost now without him, almost hopeless. And as we all do, he found his way to cope, which was directing the symphony. The video (and song) make me cry every time i see/hear it.

When I didn’t know you things were quite dull
my thoughts would quietly pace thru my mind
a plain look drawn to my face
after stepping out into the chaotic city
knowing I live for paycheck
or so I thought,
It was a regular morning
the sun greeting the tourists from the east,
the daily workers needing a shot of espresso
to drag themselves on through their days,
but as soon as I saw you
I knew you weren’t just any drowsy erbyer
to catch the morning dew
your skin had glown in the early fog
and your eyes were sparkling blue
your mouth at a jar, staring at me
as if I was the most beautiful being you had seen in decades
so I pulled myself together
reminding myself it’ll be alright
alright if I walked up to you
and asked you to spend the rest of your life
wrapped in my arms,
whispering into my ear sweet nothings
(no I shouldn’t do that)
so I built that courage
quicker than I thought I may be able to
and asked you straight out,
simply:
“Hi. How are you?”
after you replied, with your voice ever so shy
a slight crack near the end,
my heart felt
it felt something
something I find it hard to place into a sentence
there were symphonies
symphonies that my heart would dance to
they would last for years to come
years ed
and the symphonies still played
then one day you faded into the nighttime
into the stars
and the music that had played in my heart,
in my soul,
stopped playing
my entire world
had become silent
“I’ve been hearing symphonies
Before all I heard was silence
A rhapsody for you and me”
