Kyle Larson has officially signed with Hendrick Motorsports in the 5 for 2021. Larson will be the 10th driver for Hendrick to drive the 5. His predecessors are Geoff Bodine, Ricky Rudd, Terry Labonte, Todd Bodine, Ron Hornaday Jr, Kyle Busch, Casey Mears, Mark Martin, and Kasey Kahne. The 5 car has the 3rd most wins at Hendrick with 38 wins (48 has 83, 24 has 94). The 5 car also win the 1996 championship with Terry Labonte
This will be Larson’s 3rd cup series team as he has raced for HScott Motorsports and Chip Ganassi Racing. He has 6 wins driving the 42 at CGR. He has gone as far as the round of 8 in the playoffs.
Larson was suspended back in April after saying a racial slur during an iRacing race. He was suspended the next day. He will be reinstated by NASCAR on January 1st, 2021.
Hendrick Motorsports have confirmed that last year’s 48 car will be the 5 and the 88 last year will be the 48. While technically Larson is Johnson’s successor it makes more sense that Bowman is Johnson’s successor since he will take over the 48.
