Isis, also called Aset or Eset, was the Ancient Egyptian Goddess of healing, fertility and magic. Her name translates to “Queen of the Throne”. Egyptians regarded Isis as the Queen of Sorcery, Life of the Nile, Mother Moon, and Protectress. Isis’ themes are magic, harvest, dreams, divination, perspective, faithfulness, love, spirituality and destiny. Her symbols are bloodstones, amethyst, silver, myrrh, hawks and the moon.

Great mother Isis was crucial to ancient Egyptian religious beliefs. She was one of the Egyptian Gods of the Ennead of Heliopolis, which were the nine gods and goddesses that ruled Ancient Egypt. Isis was a role model for women, she was a principal deity in rites for the dead and curing the sick.

Isis was the daughter of the earth God Geb and the sky Goddess Nut, the sister of the deities Osiris, Seth, and Nephthys. She was first mentioned in the Old Kingdom as one of the main characters in the Osiris myth, where

she resurrects her slain brother and husband, Osiris, God of the underworld, and bore his heir, Horus. Her magical power was said to be greater than that of all other gods, she protected the kingdom from its enemies, governed the skies and the natural world, and had power over fate itself.

Isis was typically portrayed in art as a human woman wearing the hieroglyph sign for throne on her head. During the New Kingdom she took on traits that originally belonged to Hathor, the preeminent goddess of earlier times. Isis was then portrayed wearing Hathor's headdress: a sun disk between the horns of a cow. Isis is a bird goddess, she often takes the form of her sacred raptor; the Kestrel, or the Black Kite. In art Isis is depicted with wings attached to her arms, which can represent protection, power and mourning.

I have always been interested by ancient history and mythology. Egypt was one of the most fascinating ancient worlds to learn about and Isis quickly became my favourite goddess. Growing up I aspired to be as strong, confident and powerful as Isis so she holds a strong personal meaning to me.
