Galileo Galilei was the first person to observe Saturn through a telescope in 1610. It is named after Saturnus the Roman god of Agriculture, and was known to the Greeks as Cronus. Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and the second-largest in the Solar System. It has an average diameter of nine Earths, not including the ring's size. A day on Saturn is roughly 10.7 hours long and its year is about 29 Earth years. Saturn has the most spectacular ring system, with seven rings and several gaps between them. While Saturn itself cannot life as we know it, some of its moons have conditions that could possibly life. Saturn currently has 82 discovered moons, which is more than any other planet.

What planet did I choose?

⊱ ────── ⊰ 🪐 ⊱ ────── ⊰

Saturn ~ Roman God of Agriculture

Why did I choose this planet?

⊱ ────── ⊰ 🪐 ⊱ ────── ⊰

Saturn was the first planet observed to have rings, which made it stand out from the rest. While Saturn does have the largest ring system, the other gas giants (Jupiter, Neptune and Uranus) also have rings. Because Saturn is still typically depicted as the only one with rings I thought it was a much cooler planet than the rest growing up. I have been a huge space nerd since I was little and always loved Saturn!

About this planet:

⊱ ────── ⊰ 🪐 ⊱ ────── ⊰

Viewed from Earth, Saturn has an overall hazy yellow-brown appearance. Saturn is made up of approximately 75% hydrogen and 25% helium with traces of other substances like methane and water ice. It is one of the windiest planets with wind speeds reaching up to 1800 kilometres per hour at the equator. This planet has an average temperature of about -285 degrees F.

Has a rover or person been on/to this planet?

⊱ ────── ⊰ 🪐 ⊱ ────── ⊰

In 1979 the Pioneer 11 was the first spacecraft to reach and fly by Saturn. In 1980 the Voyager 1 revealed the intricate structure of the ring system, consisting of thousands of ringlets. Flying even closer to Saturn in 1981, Voyager 2 provided more detailed images and documented the thinness of some of the rings. Between 2004 and 2017, NASA's Cassini spacecraft orbited Saturn 294 times sending back science data about its ring system, moons and atmosphere.

If I could visit/live on this planet would I? Why/why not?

⊱ ────── ⊰ 🪐 ⊱ ────── ⊰

Saturn is a gas-giant it does not have a solid surface like Earth so although I couldn't visit/live on the planet itself I would love to be able to fly through its layers of clouds and atmosphere. If I could live there I would definitely pick one of the huge rocks from its rings so I could jump around the planet from rock to rock. It would also be interesting to visit/live on one of Saturn’s moons because of the difference in gravity and there would be an incredible view from being on a small moon next to a huge planet.
