International Non-Binary Day

The day is intended for raising awareness around non-binary identities and the issues non-binary people face (also for organizing around said issues).

So, "let's recap":

:loudspeaker: "Non-binary" is a term for a spectrum of identities that aren't 100% man or woman all the time. It's also an identity by itself.

:loudspeaker: By not (fully) identifying with their agab, non-binary people are by definition transgender, though not all non-binary people will identify with that.

:loudspeaker: The non-binary version of "boy"/"girl" is "enby" (from the abbreviation "nb").

:loudspeaker: Non-binary isn't only a third gender right in between man and woman (though it may be for some people).

Before that flag, the genderqueer flag was created in 2011 by Marilyn Roxie.

"Genderqueer" is mostly a synonym for non-binary, but the understanding of the difference between the two varies. Some see "genderqueer" as a more political term; and some just don't identify with it.

:loudspeaker: Not being seen.

:loudspeaker: Not being legally recognized.

:loudspeaker: Being discriminated against (transphobia, enbyphobia).

:loudspeaker: Not having the language to express themselves (in languages with only masc and fem forms).

:loudspeaker: Not having the proper healthcare system.

:loudspeaker: Dysphoria.

Representation is incredibly important for the whole community, but especially non-binary people.

Luckily, there has been more representation throughout the past few years.

It's amazing to see non-binary characters created and given a voice by real non-binary people.

And non-binary characters played by non-binary actors.

Representation matters, but it doesn't stop there.

Non-binary people need legal and medical recognition and rights.

:loudspeaker: Trans rights are human rights.

:loudspeaker: Non-binary rights are human rights.

:loudspeaker: Put your pronouns in your bios to normalize it.

:loudspeaker: Advocate for unisex public bathrooms.

:loudspeaker: Deconstruct the idea of the gender binary.

:loudspeaker: Listen to non-binary people. And obviously respect each on of them. Don't ask people about their "assigned gender" or "what's in their pants".

Since non-binary covers a wide area of identities and experiences, no two people are the same. that.
