101 Dalmatians

Welcome to this weeks #Takeover ,I’m Elliott and today we’ll be talking about a Disney loved and favorite 101 Dalmatians!

101 Dalmatians first appeared in a book in 1956 by Dodie Smith, then in 1961 Walt Disney turned it into an animated adventure comedy film.

The plot includes a tale of a litter of 15 Dalmatian puppies who are kidnapped by the villain of the movie Cruella De Vil, a fashion designer who wants to use their fur for a coat she wants to make. So, the parents of the puppies, Pongo and Perdita set out to save their puppies from Cruella. While also coming across and rescuing 84 Dalmatian puppies that were bought in stores bringing the total to 101 puppies. Hence the name of this story.

The film released in January of 1961 and became a box office success and was soon rated the eighth highest grossing film of that year in the North American box office, this was a great success money wise for Walt Disney since two years prior the release of 1959 Sleeping Beauty caused a huge financial drop.

Money aside this film used very inexpensive animation techniques such as xerography when painting and inking. Back then before technology was advanced enough to put and make scenes, each scene had to be drawn by hand, except at the time digital scenes were a very new thing and expensive so doing it by hand kept the budget down.

Years later in 1996 Disney released a live action movie of 101 Dalmatians followed by the sequel of 102 Dalmatians in 2000. They didn’t stop there though and three years later an animated sequel to the 1961 version was released in 2003- Dalmatians 2: Patchs London Adventure. Then in 2021 Cruella was released that was directed by Craig Gillespie hit theaters and streaming platform Disney Plus.

Overall this movies and the ones followed after I definitely recommend watching, not to mention one of the most popular songs in the original movie Cruella De Vill gained huge popularity for its catchy tune.
