Dice chess has a variety of different ways to play, it first appeared in the late 2000s Moscow where it came from an ancient Indian game called Chaturanga. It was even thought to be played as early as the 11th century in Europe.

One of the variants is rolling dice with the following numbers meaning: 1 is a pawn, 2 is a knight, 3 a bishop, 4 a rook, 5 a queen and 6 a king. Two dice are rolled and players may move either pawn that the dice indicates. A player that rolls doubles may play any legal moves.

The thing with dice chess is there are no real standard rulesets to follow, since theirs so many variants and different ways to play.

An author, John Gollon wrote a book called ‘Chess Variations: Ancient, Regional and Modern’ where it notes 3 ways in which dice may be used in connection to chess.

Another variant of the game uses two dice of contrasting colors with one deciding where to move and the other the number of moves the piece is able to make.
