The Evil Queen is not Blond

Once Upon A Hi, Fairytales! Naomi Love here. I’ve seen a lot of people talking about how the Evil Queen is actually blonde and the black hair she is shown to have is dyed, and wanted to make this blog to clear it up and explain some of the misconceptions I’ve seen.

”The Evil Queen is a blonde!!!”

The number one thing I see people insisting on is how the Evil Queen is a natural blonde. Honestly I’m not sure where this idea came from, but I think one person misinterpreted something and this rumor got spread around. The Evil Queen has black hair with purple highlights. For anyone who didn’t know, it’s possible for characters to have unnatural rainbow colors as their natural hair color in Ever After High. After all, this is a fantasy world. For example, Ginger Breadhouse has naturally pink hair.

”She’s shown as a teenager to have platinum blonde hair like Apple!!!”

Honestly if this were true it would be kind of an interesting design choice to see…. but it’s not. In the brief video we see of the Evil Queen and Snow White as teenagers, EQ has pale blue hair with streaks of dark blue and purple in it. Also, in the Class of Classics graphic novel (which is not part of the main canon series and deviates from canon a lot) she is illustrated with what is clearly pale blue hair with dark blue and purple streaks, NOT blonde hair. In faraway shots, the illustrator got sloppy and just colored the blue, but in close up shots, she is colored with the same hair colors as shown in the show design. Her hair then is assumed to get darker as she got older.

”Her hair is dyed!!!”

This is a misconstrusion of a line from one of the books where the Evil Queen notices she has gray hairs and uses magic to dye them. (She’s not able to use magic in mirror prison, but when Raven refuses to sign and rips her page out from the Storybook of Legends it causes a blast of magic which slightly weakens the prison.) She doesn’t dye her entire head of hair from blonde to black and purple. She dyes a few gray hairs back to black and purple.
