Chapter 1

“Because I heard you're all legendary warriors, and I want to learn how to become a great protagonist like you guys!”

Haru, standing at the head of the table, gazed at the heroes who had gathered. Tai, Davis and Takato sat on the couch to his right, with Marcus leaning against it, while Tagiru, Mikey and Takuya occupied the couch to his left, with the Digimon sitting away from the boys, gouging on Gatchmon’s sweets. Haru’s words seemed to impact each of the leaders differently. Tagiru was the most eager, jumping to his feet from the lounge. “You want us to teach you how to be a superstar?” Tagiru excitedly yelled, his eyes gleaming. Mikey let out a soft laugh of embarrassment and leaned forward slightly so he could see around his excited comrade, “Tagiru gets a little… eager with these types of things. I'm happy to offer some advice though.” Takuya, placing his hands around the back of his head grinned, “Well, you’ve come to the right group of people!”

“I don't know…,” Takato interjected, “Are you sure we’re capable of giving advice like that?”

“Of course!” Marcus, standing behind the lounge bended down to the young leaders level, placing his arm around him, “Don't sell yourself short. You've done some pretty amazing stuff, enough to call yourself a true man like me!”

“What do you think Tai, we should help him right?” Davis turned to Tai waiting for his opinion.

“Of course! What kind of leaders would we be if we didn't help him out?”

“So what do you want to know?” Tai turned towards Haru who looked quite embarrassed.

“I'm… I'm not too sure. Maybe you could tell me what a protagonist needs?”

“Like, qualities?”

“I guess so, yeah.”

“Alright. I'll start then?”

No one seemed to object to Tai, so he continued talking.

“This is going to seem obvious coming from me, but you need courage. And I don't mean courage like ‘punch the mega Digimon in the face’,” Marcus, not paying much attention, seemed to miss everyone glance at him as Tai continued, “You need it for other stuff as well. Like, when my mother got kidnapped by the Bakemon, Kari was really worried, just as I was. But I had to put on a brave face. I had to tell her everything would be ok, even if I didn't know myself. I think that's what being a protagonist means to me, having courage in even the worst of situations.”

“And it's thanks to that courage I can digivolve,” Agumon had moved from the group of Digimon to hear his partner talk. Tai raised his fists in a playful way, “damn right!” His enthusiasm shifted as he ed the last thing he wanted to say.

“And… courage to it you’ve made a mistake so that you can move past it.”

Tai’s words seemed to resonate with some of the other leaders. In particular, Takato seemed to gaze over to Guilmon as he joyfully downed the snacks with the other Digimon. “Megidramon was a lot like SkullGreymon, huh,” he muttered to himself. Unfortunately for him, he wasn't the only person to hear his comment.

“You know about SkullGreymon?” Davis, not noticing the sombre mood piped up, “But I thought only Tai and myself knew about him. Are you also from our universe? Or maybe we visit you later in our future, but it's your past and-”

“No-no-no, it's not like that!” Takato’s face lit up like a tomato as he madly started waving his hands, trying to cover the increasing speed of his voice, “I-I mean it only makes sense, SkullGreymon is a virus form of Agumon’s evolution line, even though virus doesn't necessarily mean bad… I mean Guilmon is… but it’s not like I've looked up to you guys my whole life or anything, or in my world you’re some heroes of a show or… “ Takato hung his head, realising he had said too much. Despite this, the ever oblivious Davis, not quite understanding what Takato hinted at patted him on the back, “Hey, I am pretty cool! I can see why you look up to me!” Over at the group of Digimon, Demiveemon took a break from munching down on his snacks, “Think we should mention Ryo?”

“I think Takato has his hands full as it is,” Guilmon replied. Shoutmon folded his arms before adding his two cents to the conversation, “let's not complicate this canon any more.”

Noticing the conversation had gone off topic, Haru coughed slightly to gather everyone’s attention, “So, uhh, I just need to be brave?”

“Yeah,” Tai replied, “You'll be someone others will look to. When times get tough and all looks lost, you’ve got to be the one to have the courage to keep trying!”

“That’s so inspirational!” Tagiru clenched his fists close to his face, his eyes bright and sparkling as always.

“That’s Tai for you, there's a reason he's the original gogglehead,” Davis complemented the older digidestined before shifting the conversation back towards himself, “So I'm next right?”

“If you want,” Haru shyly replied.

“Awesome! Because the thing I think is most important has to be…”

(Hope you enjoyed! Next time: Davis takes the centre stage as he tries to inspire Haru)
