Welcome to my first post for day 4 of

Spirit Wars, an appreciation post

inspired by this weekly challenge.

I’d like to take the opportunity to share some about one of my favorite authors, and just some of the books she’s written.

The first book I read of hers was Assassin’s Apprentice, I think not long after it came out in 1995. It happened to be a completely random selection during a trip to the bookstore.

I found the description on back the extremely intriguing. I’m a sucker for a high fantasy story that sounds like it will be about an underdog- a royal bastard no less. Also, let’s face it, I couldn’t turn down the idea of a story with a main character named Fitz. No, not Fritz, which is actually one of my favorite names.

I can’t put my finger on why, but I also found the cover art quite appealing.

This book turned out to be one of the best random picks I’ve made to date. I was immediately in love with how descriptive Robin Hobb’s writing is, and the way she goes about painting her characters and the world around them. I was excited to learn the second book in this trilogy was due out soon after I finished the first, and I read it over again while I waited.

The next two books did not disappoint. Royal Assassin and Assassin’s Quest were just as engrossing as their prequel.

Of this trilogy, I have to say the second book was my favorite. To me it had the most character development for the main character and his wolf companion, Nighteyes. The two are pivotal to the story and to each other’s characters.

Thats not to say the third book was any less enjoyable. Perhaps just more centered in the world happenings of the overall story. As a plus there are dragons of a fashion in this book.

That. Is. Always. A. Plus. To. Me. Always.

Since this trilogy was published there have been two other trilogies centered around Fitz, and some of the other characters from the first one.

The second trilogy is comprised of Fool’s Errand, The Golden Fool, and Fool’s Fate.

The third, Fool’s Assassin, Fool’s Quest, and Assassin’s Fate.

I found all six to be wonderful reads, though nothing can quite sur your first introduction to such an interesting world and characters I think. I would recommend any, or all, of them to anyone that enjoys in-depth fantasy.

Robin Hobb has written many more books than these, some within other aspects of the same world, and some completely unrelated. A full list and more information about her can be found on her website!
