── ⤷ The contestants of a reality television dating show compete for love—and their lives—in this pulse-pounding and viciously funny fiction debut from the GLAAD Award-winning author of Real Queer America. When the final four women in competition for an aloof, if somewhat sleazy, bachelor's heart arrive on a mysterious island in the Pacific Northwest, they mentally prepare themselves for another week of extreme sleep deprivation, invasive interviews, and of course, the salacious drama that viewers nationwide tune in to eagerly devour. Each woman came on 'The Catch' for her own reasons—brand sponsorships, followers, and yes, even love—and they've all got their eyes steadfastly trained on their respective prizes. Enter Patricia, a temperamental, but woefully misunderstood local, living alone in the dark, verdant woods and desperate to forge a connection of her own. As the contestants perform for the cameras that surround them, Patricia watches from her place in the shadows, a queer specter haunting the bombastic display of heterosexuality before her. But when the cast and crew at last make her acquaintance atop the island's tallest and most desolate peak, they soon realize that if they're to have any hope of making it to the next Elimination Event, they'll first have to survive the night.A whirlwind romp careening toward a last-girl-standing conclusion and a scathing indictment of contemporary American media culture, Patricia Wants to Cuddle is also a love story: between star-crossed lesbians who rise above their intolerant town, a deeply ambivalent woman and her budding self-actualization, and a chosen family of misfit islanders forging community against all odds.

── ⤷ Are you surrounded by women that you vaguely tolerate in a remote island for work? Are you struggling with your sexuality while being forced to "go after" some douchebag with far too much white man confidence? Fear not! As this lesbian hotel owner has all the things you need to get away! Ft. A sapphic cult

── ⤷ When I first heard about this book I was convinced, by mainly the cover, that it was a monster romance. Color me surprised when I actually read the synopsis at the library at it sounded much more like a horror. Color me more surprised when I went to Storygraph and found that it was actually labeled horror.

── ⤷ I've read (or I guess listened to) some of the author's other works, mainly their more autobiographical works, on Audible during my like yearly free month and I really enjoyed them. When she {the author} mentioned this work at the end of one of the audiobooks I was very intrigued. As I said, I thought that this was a monster romance, so I was like "sapphic monster romance? hell yeah, why not!"

── ⤷ So in finding out that this is, instead, a horror I was a bit surprised, but still went in to it happily. I got it for free after all, from the library, so really it's not like I'm wasting anything other than my time. And I did end up enjoying it! I found all the characters, or at least all the POV characters, to be incredibly interesting. No one is likeable but maybe the fact that this is supposed to be behind the scenes of a bachelor-esque show bled in a little. Their relationships with each other was all so fun to read and I found that it only got better as the book went on.

── ⤷ There is, however, an outlier. The Main :tm: character Renee, a 29 year old black woman questioning her sexuality who's still on the show for the progressive points the producers want to hit. I actually kind of liked that? The alienation that the main character is pretty stark compared to the interactions of the others. Sure the other POV characters, mainly Vanessa and Lilah-Mae, don't get along at first, but they still have those interactions together. Something that Renee does not have. Usually, if this were the case in another book, I would chalk it up to some "not-like-other-girl" -isms but for this it makes sense.

── ⤷ Renne knows from the beginning that she's different. She doesn't have a social media presence, she's the eldest contestant on the show, and she's Black. Hanging on by the color of her skin to stay on the show- not that she wants to as the only reason she got on was because she was nominated by her white coworkers.

── ⤷ The girls, and get crew get to Otters Island and I wish it was described a bit more, maybe the local town or just something more compared to the forest. This book also takes place in around a three day span, something that I wish was changed.

── ⤷ Usually it's the fact that a book is too long that makes people complain, hell I'm sure I've said that a book could have shaved off a number of pages before, but this time I just wish it was longer. The first half to two thirds of the book is a lot more literary and build up, but then all the action is piled into the third act, having quick and punchy death scenes right after the last but I really think it would have been more impactful if they were more drawn out. This book could have been 50 pages longer and I would have been totally fine with it.

── ⤷ Also I love the mixed media aspects, the blog posts, the letters, the message board. So fun. I love, in books that include some sort of fame, when they include bits and pieces from the fandom. And this adds some with bits about the mystery at hand.

── ⤷ Now, next up the sapphic cult I mentioned earlier. Again, they don't really show up until the end and that is such a disservice. I won't, like the book does, call it a lesbian cult because that's not really true. However it is implied that everyone in the cult is sapphic, which I love. But I would have loved even more, some more time with them. When I say I thought this was a sapphic monster romance I guess I wasn't really wrong... considering that the sapphic cult is obsessed with this bigfoot living in the forest. There is a form of love there, just not in the way I thought.

── ⤷ Along those lines, the synopsis might lead you to believe that there is a side plot of two of the contestants falling for each other but that does NOT happen. There is some vague romance side plot, but it's between a man and a woman and even then I wouldn't really call it a romance. More like a one-sided deal.

── ⤷ TLDR: I really liked it! I just really wish it was longer. Also no main character lesbians, despite what the synopsis would imply. But yes main character sapphics.
