Chi from Chobits!

Hello everyone!!

My name is Kayna and i have a genuine love for drawing my favorite video game and anime characters in my semi realistic art style!

In this blog, i’ll be posting my drawing of Chi from Chobits in my style!! :sparkling_heart: :sparkles:

I watched this anime when I was around 12 years old (i can’t believe that was 11 years ago now :sob: ).

And as an ode to nostalgia, I drew Chi :)

Before getting to my stages, I’d like to attach the timelapse first!! While this timelapse is 15 seconds, the drawing itself took me around 6 hours!!

Ok! Now that we have that, let’s get started :D

My Process

For this whole image, i’ll be using only two brushes on Clip Studio Paint Pro!

For the pose and reference, I based it off of two images:

While the pose is not extremely similar, i do tend to take photos of myself doing the pose to follow (though i don’t feel comfortable sharing them because i look extremely awkward haha) And i decided to go with the lighter outfit on the left since it’ll go with the overall image!

Sketch Stage :sparkles:

As you can see, my sketch stage is extremely minimal, simply due to the fact that I draw in a more painted style. I tend to rush into layering and color blocking quickly. I came from traditional painting so this is typically how i tend to start any traditional painting!

Face rendering :sparkles:

In almost all of my pieces, I start with getting the face completely rendered. This would determine whether or not I go completely through with this piece! It helps me fully visualize the whole image since it will be the main focal point!

Color blocking and rendering the rest of her outfit and body :sparkles:

Continuing on, I lay down colors and color block while rendering. It’s a bit inconvenient but unfortunately it’s how i work. I tend to move around a lot of pieces too while drawing.

Background! :sparkles:

I had no particular reference for the background, I simply threw certain things together that I assumed wouldn’t take shine over the main focus of the image which is Chi. I really liked the idea of neutral colors like greens, grays, and whites!

Lighting :sparkles:

Using a clip layer with soft lighting, i’m able to achieve something a bit soft and warm with the glow that i was hoping to get out of the main character.

That’s basically all!!

While my process seems simple, it actually takes a bit of time to render each part! I hope this helps everyone see a little bit about how i draw :sparkling_heart:
