Sunflower: Original Poem

Sunflower

I used to be a follower too

Never making choices of my own

I always believed that

If I did what she did

Then maybe she’d except me

But really

It only broke me

She only tore me down

Making me feel useless

Like a dumb dog

She controlled me

Rising above me

As she stepped on my shoulders

And onto my failures

But look at you

Shining in the sun

A brilliant yellow

I wish I could be so bright

And everyday

When the sun comes back up

You look to it

Without a doubt

Without failure

And then you follow it

All the way until it sinks back down

And then I start to wonder

What do you do when the sun leaves

If all you do during the day is follow it

Then what do you do when you can’t

How do you still flower

In the cold of the night

Lost in the darkness

How do you survive?

And I wonder

Why do you always follow the sun

It leaves every night

Of course it’ll always comes back

But you don’t know that

So how do you know

That you can depend on it

That it’ll always give you the light to survive?

And is that why you’re yellow

Changing yourself to look like your savior

And grow so tall

Trying to reach up to the sky and touch the sun

Don’t you know it’ll burn you?

Or maybe you don’t

Maybe after looking into the sun all this time

You’ve become blind

Mesmerized and now blinded you follow the sun still

I can’t imagine why

But then again

I’m not a sun flower

I have not bloomed in the light of one thing yet

I have not grown to amazing heights by believing in something

How do you do it?

Why do you do it?

I wonder

How do I become like a sunflower?

Ah yes, my old and incoherent thoughts, enjoy.

Also, please don’t be like a sunflower, after all, they live short lives.
