Baby’s First Victon Comeback

I recently started stanning Victon after being loosely familiar with them for a while.

Because I’m shameless, if you wanna read about that adventure, click here

Shortly after that, it was announced that Victon was having a comeback! Naturally I was very excited for my first comeback as an Alice, so I decided to document my thoughts.

I have avoided all promo material except teaser photos, so these will all be my first impressions.

Music Video

First of all, can Mr. Han Seungwoo keep his tongue in his mouth thank you very much. Second of all, can you say :sparkles: budget :sparkles: because wow this mv is stunning. Literally every shot is gorgeous, I tried to pick a favorite and I honestly couldn’t. All the are serving visuals for days. I love the contrast of the styling, switching between elegant, sophisticated, and edgy. I don’t have many specific things to say since the whole thing is perfection.

Title Track

I feel like Victon’s songs are all over the place when it comes to sound, so I really had no idea what to expect from What I Said. It hooked me right from the beginning, with the grand horns and Seungwoo’s distinct voice. With such a strong opening, launching right into Hanse’s rap was a smart choice.

The prechorus was like food for my soul, exactly what I look for in songs. When the chorus hit I was caught of guard because I was braced for something more explosive and vocally powerful, but once it got to the second part and fully fleshed out, I was totally on board. And the song just kept getting better.

The high, whining whistles behind the sultry post-chorus vocals and Hanse’s second rap creates a brilliant contrast. Once again that beautiful prechorus sweeps you off your feet, building up to the chorus that feels like a punch in the face, but like in a good way. The faint horns and low growls make a delicious combination.

The slight differences between the first two prechorus and the one following the bridge make it an abrupt yet satisfying conclusion to the song.

Overall, even if you didn’t enjoy the song, you can’t deny that it makes a strong impression. It’s bold and clearly doesn’t care about staying in the lines. It’s unapologetically grandiose and powerful. It has the same energy as a lot of other songs, but the little details set it apart. What I Said carries a lot of weight that makes it one of the most memorable songs I’ve heard in recent months.

Album

Into the Mirror

THIS CHORUS, THE VOCALS, MY GOD. Look at that, I’m obsessed already. This song gives me triumphant energy similar to Answer by Ateez, which was my #1 song of 2020, fyi. So really, need I say more?

Circle

This is a sweet little song. It didn’t make a huge impression on me, but it’s very pretty and I wouldn’t skip it.

Chess

I thought this song was pretty good, nothing special, until the last minute. That switch up really grabbed my attention and kept the song from being average.

Up to You

The melody of this chorus is incredible. I swear Victon’s vocalists must be literal angels, how else could they sound like this?

All Day

This song is lovely. It definitely follows the trend of comfort music that artists have been releasing during this time. Simple but pleasant.

Carry On

We’ve arrived at our first solo! Seungsik’s voice in this is beautiful, which I’m sure isn’t a surprise to anyone. It’s got a similar vibe to All Day, but feels a bit more intimate.

Eyes on You

It’s my bias’s turn! At first I wasn’t sure about the chorus, but that synth is too powerful and memorable to write off as a lazy songwriting decision. Also I adore Chan’s voice.

Utopia

Sejun’s gorgeous, light vocals make this melody into something spectacular. Does Sejun have my favorite vocal tone in the group? I refuse to answer.

Where is Love?

And our final solo is from the incredible Hanse. This isn’t really my genre and I probably wouldn’t seek it out, but I don’t dislike it by any means. When listening through the full album, I wouldn’t skip it.

Unpredictable

Cyn got me excited for this song, and I gotta it it delivers. The chorus slaps, kinda like a combo of Tbz’s Insanity and Ha Sungwoon’s Forbidden Island. Good job Cyn.

Flip a Coin

This sounds like a title track, with the same power of What I Said, but hey, I’m not complaining. Although I gotta say the hook of “flip that coin” is kinda funny.

We Stay

Closing out on more absolutely stunning vocals in a cheerful, sunny song that I can’t help but like. Well played, Victon, well played.

Conclusion

To sum up this little review, I’ve divided up the songs into four categories: favorites, love, like, and dislike. The songs in favorites are obviously my favorites on the album. The songs in love are the ones I would seek out and listen to a lot. The songs in like are the ones I enjoy, but don’t see myself listening to very often. And of course the ones in dislike were the ones that weren’t my cup of tea.

Why do you NEVER write this amazingly during CWC? :joy: 🤣 JK not to personally attack you but sis popped off in this blog. Love your enthusiasm. And yes, the title track did make an impression.
