How are you all doing today? Hopefully okay, and if not, I hope the pain eases soon. One thing that helps ease the pain for me is playing the ukulele. It's a simple instrument to learn, and it's not super expensive, so it's great to pick up.

A ukulele is a string instrument similar to a guitar in shape. Different from a guitar, however, the ukulele only has four strings. The instrument has a Hawaiian heritage, and means "jumping flea."

Ukuleles can come in several sizes, I including baritone, tenor, concert, and soprano. The difference in the sizes can be measured by the number of frets the instrument has.

Here's a quick diagram of ukulele anatomy in case you were unfamiliar with what a fret is:

First step in playing is tuning your instrument. You can buy a tuner for your ukulele, or a free tuner app.

The four strings, from left to right, are G, C, E, and A. If the tuner you are using isn't using these notes, it's not what you're looking for.

From there, you can start to learn some chords. To play a chord, you will want to look at a chord chart. Where there is a dot, you will want to apply pressure to the string in the correct fret as shown. Then strum the strings, and tada! You've made music of your own!

From there you'll want to start out with a couple of easy songs and practice going back and forth with some of the basic chords.

If you're looking for a new instrument to pick up learning, I definitely recommend the ukulele. It's super fun, isn't super costly, and isn't obnoxious (we're looking at you trumpets -- jk, jk, love you). The ukulele has become a stress reliever and great tool for coping with the tough times for me.
