okay, i know i said i’d try and go in order but i honestly couldn’t help myself in desperately wanting to do the prompt “Quirk Troubles” for day four of #Goretober2020

I was thinking to myself, what better way to display a major fuck up you couldn’t take back in battle than uraraka’s quirk? so I told a groupchat im in with my friends my idea; and how lucky was I to get such an amazing friend and author to help me out!

big thanks to jacky for deciding to lend a hand.

Ochako knew what it was like to grow up poor. Nothing was ever promised. Sometimes in the winter she’d wake up freezing, but there was never any heat or extra clothes in her house to warm herself up. She’d have to go sleep with her parents to get that warmth. The same occurred in the summer time, when she’d wake up sweating but there was nothing to cool herself down. She’d strip to nothing and lock her door, still with no avail it was too hot. Sometimes the water didn’t work, the city having shut it off because her parents failed to pay the water bill. There’s been more than one occasion where she’d flick on the lights and they wouldn’t work because they had failed to pay the electrical bill. However, she managed.

The teen managed without food as well. Sometimes she’d go days without any food without choice, and sometimes she purposely skipped meals so her parents would be able to eat more. Sometimes she’d deny food for as long as she could to save money. Food was never a given thing unless she was at school, begging for her friend’s leftovers. She’d get them almost every time, sometimes branching to the other tables to take the packaged food when it was allowed. Sometimes she’d have to do embarrassing things like beg for it, and she did. Whenever the opportunity she could bring some food into her house, she would.

She had been planning for the UA entrance exam, and today she had felt selfish and decided to eat something that morning. She had felt loopy from the lack of food he past two or so days, and the rumbling in her stomach ceased into a quite state once she took the first couple bites of her stale off-brand cheerios. They almost hurt her teeth they were that hard, but she decided to stomach the food for today.

The brunette was very excited, determined to get into the top school in Japan. Her goal was to the entrance exam and get into either class 1-A or class 1-B of the hero course. 90 percent of heroes came directly from UA Highschool, and heroes made a huge salary if they were popular enough. If she managed to get in, she had a chance at becoming a hero, and if she became a hero, her parents would never have to worry about food, heat, water, or electricity ever again. Her entire life had been engrossed in the idea if she somehow managed to , she would become a hero and be able to provide for her family.

No one would stand in her away.

She shoveled in the bites of stale cheerios, drinking the water that she had in replace of milk afterwards. She rose from the table, placing the Styrofoam bowl in the empty sick carefully, checking the clock on the wall to see she had about an hour to get there. She rushed to her room before getting dressed. She threw on a loose white u-neck a long-sleeved black sports jacket with a red ring around her shoulders, chest, and back, the top half being white, and both sleeves being rolled up just above the elbow. Two black athletic bands with a white center were around each wrist. Loose black pants, and then pink flats with a white trim. All of her clothes were slightly dirty, but that didn’t stop the excitement bubbling around inside of her. She felt light on her toes, stomach turning from the butterflies leaking out of her. With a wide and happy smile crossing her face, she determinedly bounced out the door. She called back a very quick, “bye love you!” Before she was gone, slamming the door behind her.

The closer she got to the large glass UA high school building, the more nervous she became. Those butterflies turned sour; her heart began to race. She could feel her own body start to warm up, but she was unsure if that was the nervousness or the lack of energy, she knew she was about to waste. The building became bigger the closer she got, and as she stepped up to the gates she stopped to stare. It was a beautiful sight, but the weight upon her shoulders ruined it. She couldn’t seem to swallow the lump in her throat, eyes wide and staring at the building in front of her. Her hands became clammy the longer she stood there, not even watching the multiple other middle schoolers walking past her. They moved in slow motion as the building seemed to swallow up her vision. It loomed above her, mocking her like it knew she was going to fail.

Ochako let her eyes flutter shut, taking a deep breath as she tried to calm herself. She swallowed the lump, ignored the butterflies, and wiped her hands off on her pants. She was slow as she entered the building, stopping some plain looking green-haired kid who looked ever more nervous than her from falling before she slipped further into the building.

There was a brief orientation. Kids from the same school were gathered together in groups, given a nametag, and they went over what was going to happen. There would be a 45-minute, 30 question written exam, and then a 7-minute practical exam. The written exam was one of the hardest and most difficult tests she had ever taken, only adding into the stress that the weight of the practical exam that would come soon.

Ochako could barely focus on the words of the radio-host like man giving the instructions. The longer she listened, the more she could feel her heart thump. She felt as if a bomb was going to go off in her chest as she warily eyed the amount of kids there. They were only going to a certain amount, and everyone looked bigger than her. Everyone looked stronger, more talented, healthier…

She ended up leaning into her hands as the teacher went over the robots. She could feel tears pricking in her eyes. She had to so she could give her parents a better life. They didn’t deserve to live in poverty because she had been born and they couldn’t afford a baby. She needed to show them she could be better, and the only way she could do that was to get into one of the bests schools. The girl didn’t want to have to hear her mother crying because, “they’re going to get kicked out of their apartment.” Or her father coming home days late after working 50 hour shifts at his multiple jobs. The stress that lingered, and it was all her fault. She shouldn’t have been born in the first place, and now she had the opportunity to try and make it.

If she failed, then it would be pointless. There would be no way to make her family proud, to give them the hope that they would one day have a better life. Before she knew it, she was getting led out to one of the arenas, trying to calm herself down with slow and steady breathing techniques. She hardly heard when the man with engines drew all the attention to him as he started to scold some poor kid. She wasn’t paying attention to anything.

Once the radio-host hero told them to go because there was no real time when it came to fights, she took off as fast as she could. She could feel the energy bouncing in her veins, and she shot off away from the other kids, turning abruptly to go a different route. A large cracking sound burst her eardrums as a robot came bouncing out, a large 2 printed on its body. Its face snapped towards him, bright red eye focusing, “target acquired.” It stated before raising its green arm and lunging at her.

Ochako scooted out the way, tapping its arm before it started to float. She rushed past, tapping her fingers together, “release!” She stated watching it crumble into a heap of sharp and pointed metal shards. The next robots came fast and hard as she barely dodged, energy fading quickly as she reached out for that touch. They floated- and then they slammed into the ground. She counted in her head as she went along, counting up to 28 before her eyes locked onto her first 3-point robot.

She moved forwards, body stiff, body sweaty, and utterly exhausted. She reached forwards to touch the robot, to send it floating and scoring just a few more points before the time ended. 31 points would be a good start. It wasn’t until she was inches away before another student slammed into her. She went surging forward, hands touching the robot and sending it flying in the air. She fell forward, underneath the green robot that started to slowly float above her.

“Excusez-moi!” The kid that slammed into her commented. She barely had the chance to look over before a bright laser came straight from the blonde’s stomach, the sparkle in his eye just as powerful as the beam from his stomach. It soared through the robot, shattering it to pieces in front of her. The faint sounds of the kid’s footsteps as he went rushing off faded.

Ochako stared at the robot above her, bright green chunks breaking off. Sharp blades, heavy screws, and large bolts started to float off, almost like they were surrounding her. Her panic became immediate as she watched the chunks float and spin in place, eyes becoming wider and glossy from tears as she felt her stomach start to twist into knots. She felt her blood run cold, her heart stopping with it as she stared at the shards dangling above her exhausted body. The brunette was frozen in place, horror written on her face as her stomach became further unhinged.

If she lost focus of her quirk, they would fall and crush her. If she moved out the way, she wouldn’t be able to focus on her quirk and she would become injured. The pieces started to wobble as her panic continued to set in. There was no one in the area she could call out to. What was she supposed to do? She tried to focus, to find a way out. The longer she stilled, the more her stomach twisted. If she moved, they would fall, but she couldn’t wait either. She needed to call out to someone, she needed-

The girl felt the acid bubbling in the back of her throat, effectively burning it. It wasn’t a second later before she failed to keep her breakfast down, losing complete control of her quirk.
