How Tame Your Hamster!

So you have your new hamster huh? That's great! But there's still some things you might need to do in order to call your hamster yours. First things first, you may not enjoy your hamster company, if your hamster doesn't enjoy yours.

So what exactly does that mean? It means you'll need to tame your hamster! And this blog will hopefully help you with that! (All pictures are not mine! Edit is by me, though)

Step 1

Make Sure Your Hamster Is Comfortable

The first week for a hamster can be hard, so it's best you give them time to ajust to their new home before making any with them, wait at least a week before you try to start handling them and making with them, though this can take longer since each hamster is unique. Before you get your hamster, make sure everything is ready, before you get your hamster try to get everything else too. The following items are things you must have; bedding, food and food bowl, drink bottle, hideouts, a wheel, and a PROPER CAGE! if you don't have a good cage, this could effect the taming process! Don't make your cage to small, the minimum is 450 square in. Also to make your hamster happy and comfortable, feed them regularly! Every hamster needs at least 10 grams of food twice a day! Also when giving your hamster food the first week, don't make any with them at all just put food in the cage and your done, this will help your hamster feel safe around you.

Step 2

Talk To Your Hamster

so your past tge first week uh? Try to make your hamster reconise your voice. talk to your hamster a couple times a day for a few minutes every day in a soothing voice. This will help your hamster get use to your voice and not fear you. Though, even if your hamster seems to not fear your voice or you when you come near the cage you still need to not make any physical with your pet. This practice means you still shouldn't touch your pet for a few days while doing this. One last thing, you can tell if your hamster is interested in you if they are standing up and staring at you with ears erect.

Step 3

Try to Hand Feed Your Hamster

Give your hamster treats through the bars, if your hamster takes them it means they trust you enough to take food from you! This is a good sign! However if they still run away from you when you are near the cage, practice step 2 for a few more days. don't give your hamster to many treats, you still want a healthy hamster as well. Also, you can rub the treat in your palm to help the hamster get use to your scent.

Step 4

Put Your Hand Into the Cage

when you think your hamster is ready, start introducing your hands. While your hamster is awake, carefully insert your hands into your hamsters cage. You can even try putting a treat or two on your palm to encourage your hamster to go up to you. Let your hamster sniff you, and don't try to force it to do anything it doesn't want to do. If your hamster is frightened and/or runs away then wait a week or two before trying again but if your hamster is comfortable going up to your hand and getting treats, then that's very good sign!

Step 5

Pick Up Your Hamster

Once you've spent some time easing into with your hamster, you should try to pick them up. Be sure get a firm hold on your hamster so it doesn't get hurt by falling off your hand. After a while your hamster may even go in your hand all by its self! Try not to grab your hamster as they may see that as a threat! Instead cup your hand together and let your hamster walk onto your hands on its own. If your hamster squeaks, hisses, "plays dead", or narrows it's eyes and holds its ears back then you shouldn't pick it up, because that means it is scared, stressed, and/or agitated. Let your hammy get to know you better before trying again.

Step 6

Interact With Your Pet More

If your hamster is freely and confidently going into your hands to be picked up then you are ready to start interacting more with your pet. Try spending more time with your hamster to strengthen your bonde. if your hamster is confident around you, then try holding them for at least a few minutes every day and at least 10 minutes a day in total interacting with them. Show them love and affection and don't forget about treats ;) the more time you spend with them the tamer they will be! (But don't spent to much time with them, don't forget they need to eat, sleep, and drink and of course have some alone time everyday!)
