You know him, we all love him. He’s constantly portrayed in songs as a jolly, fat man who gives toys to those all around the world and he is somehow still alive after a thousand years. Unfortunately, that is not the case; Santa is dead. And he was not the man that we all believed he was. He was a large-built, modest warrior who was not all that jolly. Let me tell you the story of the real Saint Nicholas...
Autumn had arrived with the promises of a tough, chilly winter. The men began to harvest crops, the women knitting blankets and socks, and the children playing in the fallen leaves. All was perfect in the kingdom of Silvia that has been under rule of the Hartbrook family for generations. Ryven and Mevia, the twin children of Queen Elysabeth and King Giradin, were out in the courtyard watching warriors train. They were also under the watchful eye of the head of the guard, Nicholas Klaus.
The prince and princess were well-known for causing mischief, which put Nicholas on babysitter duty. The warrior was trustworthy and intimidating, so of course the King and Queen would appoint him to look after them. It wasn’t his favorite job the couple had bestowed upon him, but it was about time that someone taught the twins common decency. The servants and staff could not handle their chaotic energy and constant pranks. The King and Queen claim that they have no idea as to where the twins got their rebellious spirits from, but everyone can see the sweat dripping down the side of their faces.
After a while of watching the warriors train, Ryven and Mevia began to mimic their movements and used sticks as swords. At the time, they seemed peaceful enough on their own play-fighting, but Nicholas knew better than to let his guard down. They both lacked coordination and were just hitting the sticks together; not aiming for the spots the opponent left open. That was when Nicholas decided to get some discipline in.
“Prince Ryven and Princess Mevia, would you come over here?” he called out. The two startled as they heard their names and rushed over to meet with the big warrior. “Yes, Sir Nicholas?” they said in unison. Nicholas noticed how they added ‘sir’ before his name. Either they were trying to put his guard down by thinking they respect him, or the King and Queen told them to address him in such a way.
“I saw that you two were trying to imitate the training methods. Would you like to learn how to do them properly?” he asked. Nicholas had a soft spot for children, especially for those who were eager to learn. He saw as the twins’ faces lit up. “But,” he began. “You are not to use these techniques on the staff. This is only for defending yourself and the kingdom. Do we have a deal?” he held his hands out for them to shake. The prince and princess hesitated and looked at each other. This was their only chance to learn how to fight! They looked back at Nicholas and shook his hands. It was a deal.
Eight years later...

The twins were now sixteen years old, and spent those eight years training with Nicholas Klaus instead of performing their royal duties. Why attend balls and history lessons when they could train to defend their kingdom? Nicholas, of course, did not want to get on the King and Queen’s bad side. He studied the twins as they trained and decided how they could train and perform royal duties at the same time. They were not the kind of kids who could sit down and read books; they had energy that needed to be set free.
So, he began to teach them and ask questions as they sparred. They objected at first, but they didn’t have much of a choice. If either one got a question wrong, Nicholas would flick them in the ear and have them start over. It was cruel in their minds, but it worked. They flew through their academics as a bird flew across the sky. Academic professors, the King and Queen were very impressed by Nicholas’ method of teaching, but the twins thought nothing of it.
The twins’ first opponents (not counting each other) was Goekar, a klutzy minotaur, and Flare, a crazy fire fairy. They were both loyal and trustworthy warriors of the Guard, but they were only used in special cases. They wreak havoc and chaos, which is best suited for war and extremely powerful enemies. They don’t look like much at first glance, but seeing them in action will leave you in tears.
“You will not always fight the same enemy, so it is best to branch out to different types of enemies. This is also a good opportunity to work together and combine your skills. Goekar and Flare will go easy on you, of course.” Nicholas stepped back. The two warriors charged at the twins, but before any sword and body , an agonizing neigh struck through the sky. A gorgeous lady with a broom in her hand broke through the doors. “Sigil has returned!” she shouted.
The minotaur and fairy stopped in their tracks. The twins had heard that name plenty of times. Sigil, the unicorn that stops time and wages never-ending wars. Countless kingdoms have fallen at the hooves of this monster. It was said that four warriors trapped Sigil in a world far worse than what it made for itself. Nicholas turned to the twins and grabbed them by the back of their shirts. “Jinx, you take the royal family to safety and us afterwards,” he called to the woman as he tossed the twins into her arms. Before they could say anything, Jinx raced up many stories of stairs and down corridors to the King and Queen’s study.
Jinx busted through the doors and put the twins down. “Your Highnesses, the kingdom is under attack. I am under strict orders to get your family to safety,” she said. The King and Queen did not need to ask any questions; they followed Jinx down and under the castle to the safe room. She opened a trapdoor and ushered the royal family down. After they were all safe a sound in the room, Jinx saluted. “I will protect the kingdom and you four with my life. We will bring Sigil down once and for all.” She closed the trapdoor.
Ryven and Mevia were going to bombard their parents with questions, but the Queen put up her hand. “All will be explained after the battle has been fought. Whether we live or not is the question. The kingdom of Silvia is in the hands of The Four Saints, and I couldn’t be happier.” Elysabeth hugged her children close and Giradin wrapped his arms around all three of them.
