My mother and I were bundled up in sweaters, hats, and scarves to fight against the cold breeze that threatened to break through our shields of warmth. We were at the top of a tour bus to see how the city decorated itself for Christmas. We went through neighborhoods and city blocks, all coated with Christmas lights.

Two lights caught my attention and planted itself in my mind: two betta fish. One was red and the other was blue, which stirred up past memories of Gem and Selethen. The blue betta fish had its fins “spiked” out with the tips colored in red. The red one was peaceful with slight blue coloring among its red scales.

It reminded me so much of Gem and Selethen, I couldn’t help but smile. Yes, they had short lives and they were just fish, but that made their distinct personalities more interesting. Who would’ve thought that betta fish could be so interesting?
