My Heart is my Castle

┗━━━━━━━━━━━━━┛

A dragon stands, a fatal wind to his chest, he knows he is dying. A knight stands not far away, his bloody sword in his clenched hands.

“Before I die, please listen to my tale.” The old dragon pleads, his legs giving out from under him. Forcing him to lay on the uneven old cobblestone road.

The knight does not reply, but slowly sits, his sword resting unsteadily in his hands. Ready for any sign of treachery by the dragon.

The dragon does not care, he only takes a deep breath. His nostrils a light by his held back flames.

“I was raised here, by an old wizard and his wife. Long dead now.” The dragon sighs, ing his foster fathers face. The lines of age on his face and days of tales of old. Of kings and queens, great dragons and many wars. But that is the past he re bitterly.

“Before his death, he gave me to the king of this land. Asking nothing of me but to protect what I held dear.....” The beast adjusts his front legs to rest more comfortably. His wings weakly flapping for a moment. Muscle memory of those days he flew around these lands, watching all that he loved down below.

“And so the king built me a chamber in which I could call home. Where I could rest and replenish, a place where when in trouble he could call upon me.” The knight looks behind the dragon at the ruined castle, his eyes turning to slits for a moment at the burnt remains.

The ancient beast knows what the young man must be thinking and huffs, smoke bellowing out.

“It was the savages in the next kingdom over. I was in a long slumber, I did not hear when the dear princess screamed my name.” The dragon whispers, looking back at the castle.

The days he spent with Merry were sweet and far behind him now. Those days of story telling and of being taught how to feel sympathy are gone.....

“When I awoke it must have been many years in your tiny human lives. For all I found was dust....... And I raged as I found out what happened to my sweet princess..” The beast turns back to the boy, the monsters old wrinkled eyes weeping freely.

“I lost control and burnt the neighbouring castle to the ground... I did what they did to my dearly loved kingdom!” He roars, sparks spitting forth, the knight raising preparing to strike.

“Oh, please. I am already dying. My heart grows weaker as I speak. My lungs smaller, my vision blurring.” The dragon explains, tears still running down his face.

“I don’t want to die being viewed as a bloodthirsty monster.” He weeps, his right front paw weakly striking the ground. “I want to die being viewed as a living being. I want to die with not a look of hate in your eyes, I want someone to look at me like my Merry did. Unafraid of me!” He wheezes out, his head falling to the ground.

“My dear sweet Merry, I have failed you! I have killed so many in hopes to keep your grave peaceful and yet I die here, unable to let go.” He sighs, his chest spasming with emotion.

The knight, kneels, his hand reaching upward. As he pulls off his beaten helmet, to reveal his face.

His eyes calm, no longer hateful, as he stares towards the dragon.

“I cannot bare to hate a being who has held so much pain in its heart.” He says, leaving his sword behind, his helmet forgotten.

“I do not want to go. My heart barely beats, my vision has gone... I am not ready to die. I don’t want to face those I have failed....” The dragon shakily sobs, his lungs wheezing.

The knight comes to rest his hands on the dragons forehead, gently rubbing away his worries. Trying to comfort in any way he can, but dragons are far between now. Few remain.

“Know that your magic does not die with you, that your tale will continue on. That your sweet princess awaits, your wizard eager to meet you again.” The dragons eyes closed slowly, his breathing hitching, as the knight continues. “And that I regret most being the death of you. A noble warrior in soul and body.”

Fin.

So for this weeks challenge in the fantasy and supernatural club we got to write whatever we wanted within those genes. This probably sucks, but oh well.

I hoped you enjoyed and are having a very healthy day/night!

This soooo does not suck. It made my heart ache. I may have a thing for noble dragons and knights, but don't tell anyone. Fantastic story! 🤓
