I really like this power. It’s the main power utilized in my favorite rpg Stella Glow, and has so many creative uses.

Main Uses

Music can be very powerful. It can cause you to feel a certain way depending on the rhythm. It can also be used as a tool of motivation, inspiration, and creativity. Music can also emphasize certain moments, making them feel more emotional. (Which is the way bards in rpgs use it!) and there are lots of things it can be used with! It can make you and your allies move faster, be stronger if we’re talking basics. But it can also be used as a form of summoning or conjuring spells, giving them shields or inflicting status effects. The more offensive use for this is something like a super sonic voice that can have some crazy effects. There’s even legend of a legendary kind of song and or screech that can cause instant death to anyone who hears it! More commonly associated with mandragora and mermaids, but still just as deadly. If you have a musical creature or spirit living in your instrument in addition to having an angelic sky hypnotic voice, you’ll give master troubadours a run for their money in of who’ll hire you!

Dark Side

The biggest thing with this power is pretty basic. You’ve gotta know how to sing. Or at the very least how to properly control your voice. Over using its effects can make you go mute or strain your voice so much it hurts to use the power. If you harm your voice badly enough, you’ll never sing the same again. Same goes with breaking your instrument.

And if there’s one thing this power likes to stress, its that you have to do it correctly. If your a note off, or don’t have the right pitch, you can mess the whole thing up drastically. Another thing is that it effects whoever’s in earshot to hear. But that’s not always a good thing. Sound travels farther than you can see, so there’s a good chance the singer isn’t careful that they’ll effect someone they didn’t mean to hear. Also be wary that for the effect to continue, the singer has to keep the song up. Because the second they stop, that can all go away as fast as they started it.

How it’s Described in writing

A power like this required rather colorful writing for people to get immersed with it. This is because you can only imagine what it sounds like in a book verses hearing in a movie or show. You obviously can’t see music normally but you can hear and feel it. But if your book takes place in a world where you can see these things, what is seen is always music notes and bars. (Basically floating glowing sheet music.) If this isn’t the route your going for, I’ve also seen the area of music be depicted as a glowing transparent sphere around the singer. That way you can literally see how far the sound reaches out and what it affects is everything that glowing hue touches.

If the music plays an instrument, chances their powers don’t work with out it. So they’ll be protecting that instrument very carefully! Contrary to scenes of people beating others over the head with guitars, musical instruments are super fragile! (I have yet to see someone with a portable piano, but I’m willing to be surprised!)

This is pretty universal, but if you’re in a place where you can’t hear anything, this is useless. I’m talking about space or really anyplace that doesn’t have air.

One thing that isn’t really expressed with this power is how a song only effects allies or only effects enemies. Even if they can all hear the same song! Would be really cool for someone to explain that rule.

And that concludes the musical power post! I hope you found it helpful! If you like this topic and want to discuss more like it, be sure to the Adventure Class Chat! Good luck writing your magic meisters, Siren witches, and Mandrake creatures!

I tried to play the piano, but I could never get my hands to function on the keys correctly.
