Illusionists are a very versatile power houses in stories, and have a wide range of uses! Let take a look at some!
Main Uses
Invisibility is one of the biggest uses for this one. If you can change what a person sees, you can basically become undetectable to them easily. They can also make targets to see, hear, touch, smell and/or taste things which do not actually exist or cause them to perceive things differently from what they truly are. Some s can create complex and detailed worlds, others may be able to only alter the way they or the target are perceived. If you aren’t a shapeshifter, you could even mask your appearance into something else. This is great power for performers who want flashy effects in their shows minus the risks involved. You can create fake copies of yourself or fake creatures to intimidate foes. If you summon up a fake dragon, I bet half the people trying to hurt you will run instead of fighting! But this isn’t limited to just sight. You can make people hear or even smell things that aren’t there.
Dark side
This can go to some dark places. Since this power is used to trick the brain, you could really mess a persons mind up with it. Some illusionists can trick a brain into thinking it’s dying. Or make it think it dies over and over leading to the person going insane. They can even make something that’s completely real to the victim like a monster that can attack them for as long as the victim thinks it’s real. Some can even trick themselves into a changing reality for some interesting results. Illusions of pain are also a thing about tricking a person into thinking their in excruciating pain, completely incapacitating them. But another side effect of illusion powers is the strain they have on the . It takes intense concentration and over use can easily give the a headache or even make them out from it.
How it’s Described in writing
This usually can’t affect a bunch of people at once unless the illusionist is very skilled. It’s hard enough tricking one person but an entire crowd is never and easy task. When put into writing, it’s often described and blurring in and out like a camera lens since the power relies heavily on perception. Flashes of light are also appropriate since all we see is different kinds of light. When these powers are used, they often have to be when the illusionist and the target make eye . Or at the very least their eyes have to be open. Often times illusionists are extremely OP in books. They can usually use their illusions with next to no limitations whatsoever. It has to be by touch, line of sight or limited area. Whatever it is, be sure there’s some limit on them! I can sort of understand how illusions can be perceived as real, but necessarily how something real can be seen as an illusion. If there’s a real lamp, an illusion can make it seem like it disappeared, but it didn’t actually disappear. Some books try to manipulate the idea that the lamp actually did disappear altogether, but then it’s not an actual illusion anymore now is it?
And that’s the post on illusion powers! Good luck writing your magicians, vision masters and manipulators!
