This was an interesting idea I got from a friend! It's seemed like a fun premise so I decided, "why not?"
Main uses
Since this power has to be ingested, how it works is different than powers that can just be activated by the mind. But cooking powers have to be made and then eaten to have effect. But the effects can essentially be anything! Eating a magic cookie could increase your strength or speed, or a magic curry could give you fire breath and even heal people! But physical abilities aren't the only use they have. Someone with this power could make a cupcake that makes whoever eats it fall in love with the first person they see! Or even turn them into an animal! And if you want to go classic, poison an apple and give it to that one girl who's prettier than you for revenge! This area is relatively unexplored but that only means that more magic cookbook stories are needed!
Dark side
Like any food, you can only eat so much of it. And not ALL magic food with benefits tastes great either. Recipes for making these types of foods are very VERY precise. One grain to many of a certain magic spice and instead of getting laser eyes, your eyes will melt! This is why I all examples I've seen, even the most basic of magic recipes must be done by someone with high skill. Not to mention the ingredients themselves can be dangerous to. Dragon blood might be poisonous in your universe, but when cooked properly it may be useful to recipes! (Kind of how puffer fish has poisonous parts and only highly skilled chefs can cook it.) And a lot of times, effects from these foods wear off or the person needs to eat something else cooked with stronger magic to override it. Not to mention, some magic food has shelf life just like normal food. It won't always be good enough to eat or keep the same effects the longer it sits out!Your magic chef also has to be careful of cooking disasters! Not following the recipe exactly can lead to catastrophic or even deadly results.
Described in writing
Well it's clear that when describing magic food and magic recipes, they will have a good chance of looking very unique compared to regular foods. Maybe they're purple or green? Many fantasy foods look unnatural or even alien in appearance with things normally eaten. But at the same time, they can look completely harmless and blend in with the food in your fridge! Cooks have to be careful not to mix their magic experiments in with their regular foods!
Another major factor of food magic is how it tastes! A good way to get practice with this is to look up food critic reviews and certain foods. (I'm not even joking. This seriously helps a lot if you want to learn how describe flavors in food.) And if you want to go the opposite route of making the food taste gross don't be afraid to get creative!
I've personally never seen this used in combat, but clearly your magic cook can't carry a kitchen around with them everywhere. (I know some have tried) if the situation demands it, your cook will have to have quick access to foods they've already made. Usually in a basket they carry with them, along with their special ingredients. This also means your cook never has an endless supply of treats for themselves or their team and have to be very resourceful when running low on supply. It's not the most impressive power, but I'm sure someone out there can find a cool way to make it epic!
And that's the post on cooking powers! I hope it didn't make you too hungry lol. Did you like it? Have things to add? Leave a comment below! And if your interested, feel free to check out the fantasy committee for even more of this type of content!
Good luck writing your royal chefs, kitchen mages and mystic foodies!
