He could see it.
It was right there.
If he could just make it to the exit he’d be home free.
But the footsteps were close now. Even with a head start he wasn’t sure if he could avoid conflict.
The door was just a few feet away.
If he reached out he could grab the handle.
But before he could, he felt something strong grab hold of his ankle and yank him backwards.
After falling to the ground, looked to his feet in horror to see the mass of black threads snaring him in place.
Fear spiked in his chest as the figure pursing him emerged from the shadows.
“You have yet to master your speed. You should be able to outrun me easily.” Her voice was laced with darkness and disappointment.
“You should be able to make it to the exit while I’m standing at the halfway point with your power. I’m not letting you leave until you can prove you know how to use it properly. I even gave you a head start.” She sighed. “ You realize the type of boot camp you’re being sent to? The strongest of all hero’s train their powers here. Speed is an amazing gift, but you still need training. I’m extending your hours.”
“Please mom, this is the eleventh time I’ve done this! I’m tired-“ he began.
“I don’t asking if you were tired. We’re not leaving until you do this right.” She turned around dragged him along with her as she made for the starting line again.
“Mom no!” He begged.
“We’ll discuss your punishment later. No matter how many times I have to chase you through this courtyard, you will be ready when the day comes to ship you off.” She said plainly.
He groaned in defeat as he went limp and let himself be dragged to his fate. Even if the course of his life depended on it, he couldn’t win against her. Another day of training his new life in the military.
