She is and always was benevolent and caring, but her ways to exercise her will have dramatically changed, mostly for the worst.

Biography:

this story has her at the center and is useful but not essential to understand master Elara Heltyx' full story, but you should read it if you have time.

After allowing numerous of Ringo Vinda's Resistance to escape the droid army, master Heltyx went into hiding with them. Unfortunately for them, their location would be revealed and it quickly got raided. The of the resistance were either executed or captured and Elara was brought before iral Trench. In order to punish her for causing him so much trouble, he decided that instead of executing her, it would be better to send her into exile where she would not be found easily, somewhere where she would be tormented by simply being there: Moraband, the land of the sith. The planet was largely a wasteland, with very few animals living there and barely more vegetation, both being limited to very small portions of the planet where the climate is more temperate.

When her capsule landed on the desolate planet, Elara realized in what kind of trouble she was. She found herself without her lightsaber, without with the rest of the galaxy, on a planet that most jedi would avoid visiting, and forced to cohabit with the sith purebloods, which aren't exactly known to be friendly toward jedi. Not to mention that, for a master known to be very connected to the force, being on a planet so intertwined with the dark side was plainly painful.

She took shelter in the sith temple. Duststorms are frequent and violent and the Moraband dust is so fine it severely damages the lungs. She would eat the so-called bloodsoup to sustain herself, despite its psychoactive effects. Days became weeks and weeks became months. During her stay, in spite of all her best efforts, fear would begin to replace the previously resourceful and optimistic jedi master. Anger would begin to build up from failing her mission. Hate towards the separatists would only grow as she was alone in her thoughts. Finally, suffering would get the best of her, knowing her apprentice died doing what she told her to do, being to slow master Jall who she ired and watch him get blown up, and so many of the of the resistance, the kids that she in part trained, they died because of her... Even for the toughest mind in the best conditions, this is rough, and these were some of the worst conditions one can be in.

Day after day, master Heltyx could feel the dark side creeping up on her. Despite her best efforts to stay in the light, it appeared impossible to do when being so far from it, when being so deep in the darkness. Every day, she heard the whispers from the ghost of Darth Bane, of all the sith lords buried on this forsaken planet, as she tries to stay connected to the light side of the force. They tell her and if she was more powerful, she could have save them, that the dark side can teach her how to bring them back, that she should seek that power. She tried for so long to refrain from doing so, hoping that someday someone would come looking for her and rescue her. But how many months, or years, had ed without any sign of potential rescue? She didn't know anymore. After so much time refraining from even considering the dark side, she ended up giving in. After so much time feeling hopeless and powerless, she felt powerful, able to make a difference when it would count. She found a sith lightsaber, laying amidst the dust for thousands of years, and claimed it as her own. During her fall, she didn't lose her benevolent will, but the hell is paved from good intentions. She had lost her way and she knew it. She knew what she was doing was wrong, but why did it feel so right? She tried to convince herself that she didn't have a choice, but it was only to ease her conscience.

One day, a ship landed on Moraband. This time, it was no dream or nightmare, nor the bloodsoup playing tricks on her. It was real. A crew had mechanical problems and landed to fix their ship. Elara tried to convince them to take her with them and drop her wherever other than this forsaken planet. The crew was hesitant and were going to refuse. Unfortunately, the previously master jedi resorted to violent persuasion to convince the crew. She thought she could return to the jedi temple, speak to the council and in time redeem herself. But there was no temple to return to, no council to speak of, all the jedi were dead, the Republic and the CIS were no longer, only the empire reigned on a hopeless universe. Once again, she was alone, isolated from the light side, with only fear, anger, hate and suffering.
