Syrian Hamster

The Syrian hamster is one of the most popular choices of hamster. They range from 5 - 7 inches long which is one of the largest species; they are solitary animals that will become aggressive if put with others and even kill if they feel that their territory is being threatened.

Chinese Hamster

Similar to most species except for having a slightly longer tail, they range from 3 - 5 inches long. They’re also solitary animals which needs its own cage like the Syrian hamster.

Russian Campbells Dwarf Hamster

They can be housed in pairs but not necessary to do so as it can be a challenge. They range from 3 - 4 inches long and come in a variety of colours and patterns.

Winter White Dwarf Hamster

They can change to white in the winter but return as their original colour in Spring/Summer. They range from 3 - 4 inches long and can interbreed with the Russian Campbells Dwarf although it’s not recommended to.

Russian Dwarf Hybrid

A Winter White and a Campbells Russian dwarf breed, these are the dwarf hamsters that you will find in pet stores. Sometimes pet stores label them as “Winter White” or “Campbells” but really they’re a hybrid and it be can difficult to differentiate. Their fur won’t change colour despite them being part winter white. It’s difficult to find winter whites and Campbells that aren’t hybrids.

Roborovski Hamster

They’re the smallest of the hamsters on the list ranging from only 1.5 - 2 inches long, as well as the fastest of the lot so they’re hard to tame which may be difficult for beginners.
