This weeks weekly question is about “why do we dream”, what’s the purpose of dreaming? Science still actually can’t explain why we dream or what purpose it holds, however many theories do try to explain it; I’m going to outline some of these theories and with hope it’ll inspire you all to respond with your own ideas.

━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━

Memory consolidation, dreams could allow for further processing and memory reorganisation of information you’ve accumulated throughout the day; which could strengthen long storage and recall of this information.

━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━

Emotional processing, dreams could be way to deal processing and regulation of emotions particularly ones that are difficult to address when awake- although this is somewhat of a freudian perspective.

━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━

Evolution theory/simulation of threats - some theories suggest that dreams are a way of the mind to rehearse potential threats, so that we are able to respond to them, enhancing survival skills

━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━

Problem solving, dreams could allow us to explore and experience real-life problems subconsciously, and in doing so be better prepared for them, if only due to subconscious inference.

━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━

Activation- synthesis theory, its a theory that purposes that the summative of the brains neurones randomly firing during sleep, which is elucidated and synthesised into a functional narrative (dream)

━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━

Mental housekeeping, dreams could be the brains way of clearing up information, of reorganising it - allowing for unnecessary or useless memories to be forgotten

━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━

Inconsequential brain activity, dreams are simply a product of brain activity during sleep, and serve no real purpose or meaning

━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━

Freudian theory, Sigmund Freud proposed that dreams are a way to access one’s unconscious mind, shedding light on one’s desires and repressed thoughts.

━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━

The final theory is called “Jangian theory” Carl jangian theory suggest that dreams are there to compensate for imbalances in one’s psyche, which provide a outlook into a one’s mind, such as unconscious aspects

━━━━━━ ◦ ❖ ◦ ━━━━━━

What would happen if people could no longer dream?
