❖ The moon hung heavy overhead, the stars shining
endlessly. The white of her hair glowing as she
shifted to lean against the man beside her. Silence
hanging heavy in the air, though, it wasn't of the
uncomfortable sort. It was a calm sort of quiet.
The fire crackled and reflected nicely in her eyes
then,, out of nowhere, she finally spoke. Her
voice carrying a melancholic tone that often
appeared whenever she spoke. It was only more
prominent this time. Her eyes closing as she sat
up straight now. The warmth vanishing from
his side. "You,, too, will betray me one day.
Will you not?" She questioned, staring onward
not quite at him- but not quite through him
either. The air around the two grew a little cold
even despite the fire just a few feet away. He
shook his head though, fully believing himself.
The answer didn't seem to appease her. Not
truly. Her eyebrows furrowing as she glared
faintly. Humans were notorious for their lies.
She knew this well, far too well, promises of
the past were often broken by such traitorous
creatures. Ones too careless with their own
mortality. Despite these doubts, she hissed a
bitter “𝘛𝘤𝘩, 𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵.” and moved closer to the fire.
The truth of the matter was, she couldn't have
believed his words even if she wanted to. Not
fully, not yet, it had only been about a year
that she had been traveling with him. She
had gotten quite comfortable in his presence
but it didn't erase her doubts. It, actually, only
made them all the more prominent. It was
𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 she wanted to trust him, that she
couldn't. Her past proved as much. The love
of those around her being viewed as a form
of betrayal in her own eyes. Broken promises
littering her every memory, one in particular
being rather prominent. It was likely the most
painful of them, especially given her. . .
𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯. Something she deemed to be more
of a curse than any sort of blessing. Eternity.
The fire crackled onwards, into the night, the
shadows stretching and dancing around her.
The smoke barreling up like some sort of beacon.
She didn't sleep that night, that was common.
Her eyes shifting from the fire, to him, watching
over him as he slept. Determined to keep him
safe throughout the night, if nothing else.
⌗ 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘦
❖ Days later, she was sitting up on the roof of a
building, overlooking the area below and keeping
watch as he worked quietly below her. Only
dropping down whenever he finally called out
to her. Her expression as bitter as it always was.
“𝘛𝘤𝘩, 𝘐 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘰 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺
𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮. 𝘈𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦?” She
muttered half under her breath and half aloud.
He only laughed in response and gave a half
joking reply. He meant it, of course, but didn't
know just what it meant to her. Not entirely
anyway. How could he? She was so tight lipped
about her past and how hurt she actually was.
“𝘏𝘢𝘩𝘢! 𝘚𝘰 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦, 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘺, 𝘐 𝘸𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘦
𝘺𝘰𝘶. 𝙄 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙚, 𝘢𝘭𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵?” His smile was sweet.
The way his hair blew in the wind as he said it.
She felt like time, which had always been frozen
to her, finally began to move again. She finally
let herself believe what he was saying now.
He wouldn't betray her. He wouldn't leave her.
She wouldn't be alone if she stayed with him.
“𝘍𝘰𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘩! 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘢𝘯'𝘵 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘺 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵. 𝘠𝘰𝘶
𝘤𝘢𝘯'𝘵. . .𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵?” There it was again. The tone
she often seemed to hold. This time, however
it was different. He remained certain of his
prior words. His hand extending and making
a "pinkie promise" of sorts. It was cheesy, but
it seemed to get his point across if nothing
else. The look on her face mixed between
judgemental and looking as though she were
about to make fun of him. She didn't though
instead she only let her expression relax and
gave a faint nod to follow his actions. A quiet
smile appearing on her face for once. She
had gotten the confirmation she needed.
𝘓𝘪𝘢𝘳. . .
⌗ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘽𝙚𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙮𝙖𝙡
❖ The day had started like any other. The two
had been out traveling together, heading to
one of the neighboring regions. The sky was
nice, sunny, she was looking at one of the items
he had cooked. Maybe that was why she didn't
notice them being followed. The "strangers"
seeming to attack by surprise,, but they were
weak . . . the fight was easy.. for her. She had
thought it would be just as easy for him, he
was so strong- so why. Whenever she turned
to look at him, to continue their journey, why
was he bleeding. Why was there so much blood?
Her body had recognized the feeling before
her mind could actually understand what she
was seeing. Dread. If she were truly alive, then
perhaps she could've felt her blood run cold.
Maybe she'd have been able to feel her stomach
churn with regret. How hadn't she noticed?
He was right there. 𝙃𝙚 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙗𝙚𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙙 𝙝𝙚𝙧.
She didn't see the blood? She didn't see him
get hurt? Why did he not call out to her?
Her mind suddenly felt like a tornado. Panic
rushing through her as she desperately reached
out towards him. Her eyebrows furrowing as
she was consumed by a mixture of despair
and sheer rage. “𝘏𝘦𝘩,, 𝘐 𝘨𝘶𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘐 𝘭𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘢 𝘭𝘰𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘣𝘭𝘰𝘰𝘥
𝘩𝘶𝘩?” His voice shattered the silence that
had grown heavy in the air. It wasn't as enjoyable
as it had been before. Her anger filled eyes
looking in to his. “𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵!? 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘪𝘥𝘪𝘰𝘵!! 𝘠𝘰𝘶. . .
𝙔𝙤𝙪 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙚𝙙
𝙔𝙤𝙪 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙚𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙒𝙊𝙐𝙇𝘿𝙉'𝙏 𝘽𝙀𝙏𝙍𝘼𝙔 𝙈𝙀!!”
Her voice yelled out almost as loud as thunder
itself. He was fighting the darkness threatening
to consume his vision, if only for a bit longer.
Her embracing him only served as an attempt
to prolong the inevitable. He was trying to stay,
whispering quiet apologies as she sobbed
and screamed at him. Her rage nearly unmatched
“𝘐'𝘮 𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘺. . . 𝘐 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘥𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴
. . . . 𝘐'𝘭𝘭 𝘣𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘺𝘰𝘶. . . 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘯𝘰𝘸, 𝘺𝘰𝘶'𝘭𝘭 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳
𝘣𝘦 𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘦 . . . 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵, 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘱𝘩𝘺𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦. .
𝘐'𝘮 𝘴𝘰𝘳𝘳𝘺. . ” His hand rested above her heart
to try and signal that's where he would be once
he abandoned her. The words fell on nearly
dead ears though. Only serving to further fuel
her sorrow and rage. Her hug growing tighter
as the warmth left his body almost completely
now. She didn't have a heart to keep him in.
She was created, not born, it's why she had
no luxury of death. Her screams of sorrow
only grew louder as he finally drew his last
breath. He lied to her. He lied and betrayed
her.
“𝙉𝙤. . . 𝙉𝙊!!! 𝙔𝙤𝙪. . . 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙞𝙩𝙤𝙧!!”
It was the only thing she could say now.
Her sobs echoing as she clung to his cold
body. The power and anger in her voice were
nothing in the face of a humans mortality.
She couldn't bring him back and it infuriated her.
“𝘚𝘵𝘰𝘱 𝘪𝘵. . .𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦. .𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘺 𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘰. .
𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘥. .” her voice was nothing but a
quiet plea as the sky began to grow dark. Another
night would fall. . .but this one would be spent
𝙖𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙚.
