What is a Haiku?

Haiku (俳句) is a short verse type of poetry that originated in Japan. Traditional Haiku consists of 3 lines totalling 17 syllables in a 5-7-5 syllable structure, and focusing subjects are nature, seasons, and a fleeting moment.

A few rules to when writing a Traditional Haiku:

❧ It has three lines.

❧ It has five syllables in the first and third lines.

❧ It has seven syllables in the second line.

❧ Its lines don't rhyme.

❧ It includes a kireji (切れ字), or cutting word.

❧ It includes a kigo (季語), or seasonal reference.
