What is a Haiku?
Haiku (俳句) is a short verse type of poetry that originated in Japan. Traditional Haiku consists of 3 lines totalling 17 syllables in a 5-7-5 syllable structure, and focusing subjects are nature, seasons, and a fleeting moment.
A few rules to when writing a Traditional Haiku:
❧ It has three lines.
❧ It has five syllables in the first and third lines.
❧ It has seven syllables in the second line.
❧ Its lines don't rhyme.
❧ It includes a kireji (切れ字), or cutting word.
❧ It includes a kigo (季語), or seasonal reference.
The famous Haiku
Matsuo Basho is probably a name that is synonymous with the Haiku. Below is his famous Haiku that is almost a written rule to always give as an exmaple:
古池や
蛙飛び込む
水の音
Furuike ya
Kawazu tobikomu
Mizu no oto
The old pond
A frog leaps in.
Sound of the water.

Challenge rules:
✤ Only Traditional Haiku accepted.
✤ NO "modern" Haiku accepted. (Often confused with Senryu)
✤ A minimum of 3 Haiku.
✤ Use the hashtag #echoesofhaiku (do not add in title)
✤ Plagiarism will not be tolerated. There are severe consequences for plagiarising or AI assisted poetry.
✤ Please add a picture other than your background image.
✤ Please add credits or disclaimers for the images that you use.
✤ Submit before the deadline
