A letter from the silence between phone calls

Silence's POV

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I might be the only one

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀who wants to hug the ending

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀and fade into nothingness,

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀to be filled with infinite, unuttered words

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀that are supposed to be

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀already dancing on the lips

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀of the people who hold on to me dearly,

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀savouring the interval.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I want to sing lullabies of all the words

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀doing ballet on the tip of the tongue

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀but never making it out.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀But I figure it's too much to ask for

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀because the beings of flesh and blood

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀never understood

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀how much I'm in love

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀with my vacuousness,

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀that I so want to kiss my chasm

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀and melt into its embrace

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀as the words would start

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀slipping out from parted lips.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀I'd see myself vanishing in the air

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀and slowly becoming a plenum

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀as the two sides of the call

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀would either sigh or laugh.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀One might start to tear up,

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀or it might be both of them.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Perhaps I'd be filled with

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀a bunch of "I love you"s

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀or with the inner jokes

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀that haven't been said in years

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀because the time and distance

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀painted the story differently last time.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Or maybe a voice from the other end

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀would coat me in laughter and giggles.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Might be a few sorrys as well, followed by

⠀⠀⠀⠀   some "I miss you"s.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀One might hold the phone

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀a little tighter this time,

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀or maybe they would hang up,

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀only to look at the empty space

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀where I once was

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀and wonder if they had said enough.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀By then I'd be an empty fullness

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀with a sigh of regret or a smile of relief.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀So if you ever wonder

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀whether I was truly there,

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀between the spaces, the pauses,

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀the held breaths—

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀know that I was.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀With all that I never spoke,

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Yours,
