My friends and I have been doing this since we started sessions but I'm curious if anyone else that plays has tried it...
Using world edit programs I built a huge five biome world to my DM's exact instructions, with a HUGE World Tree in the middle of a forest surrounded by ice, stone, dark and desert biomes. This we then open as a Realm and invite all the players in to start customising it!
Next we'll be planning out where the cities would be and running rivers through the surrounding lands, adding pathways and clearings to the dense forests that the PCs would traverse
Then it's time to start building up the actual cities, starting with the walls and then the buildings inside, with hundreds of generic houses plunked down and spotted with some specifically designed buildings like a favourite tavern, or the best stables etc
With a realm open anyone can work on it when they have free time and it's a wonderfully creative way of getting the players invested in the world! Great for a long term campaign and just something fun to work on when you have down time :3

I once tried something like this, but it never got off the ground
It takes free time and dedication aka no life lmao
I have a lot of down time when I'm in a rough health patch, sometimes months of being bed bound which is a great excuse to catch up on all the games and TV shows I never get time to delve into! :joy:
Wait... So you build the whole setting, Thats pretty damn impressive!
Well there's a couple of programs where you can autogenerate terrain over certain areas. It still takes a lot of work because it only works over square/ rectangular areas selected at opposite corners so theres a lot of tweaking to make it look natural and to make the environments run into each other in a believable way and the buildings of course are done by hand (although you can fill in areas like floors really fast with the selection tool which is great!)
So it still takes hundreds of hours and some determination but I find it so peaceful and rewarding it's really worth it :3
