Another suggestion is do not make a story but make conflicts for the players to overcome!
I dont know how helpful this will be but I did make a post about this exact thing. If you'd like to check it out

There's the link to the post
1. Read the DM Guide and Monster Manual inside and out.
2. Have a valid reason for anything. Really create specifics, even if the players never ask.
3. Keep descriptions of the setting detailed, but interactions brief. In other words, draw the world around the players but don't force them to interact with certain things.
4. Extension of #3: NEVER RAILROAD.
5. Sometimes the players will go completely off the intended path, and that's okay. You can always ease them back in.
Always : you're the DM. This game is run by your rules. ;3
1. Always say yes to what a player asks you to do, no matter crazy the suggestion is
2. If a player tells you that they would like to see something, figure out a way to include it. For example, if a player says that they would like to get to know a NPC better, even if you didn’t have that planned for the NPC
3. Session 0. Make sure that you have a session 0 so you, and the other players, get to know each other’s characters and to balance the party.
4. Read the books
5. Watch some youtube videos on different D&D topics. I would recommend watching the channel Dungeon Dudes, who have some really interesting videos about mechanics and stuff in video games, and Taking20, who also makes really interesting videos about characters.
Be prepared if something goes south. You might have this amazing story for your heroes to go on until a player makes a bad roll or do something unexpected (kill the king, for example🙄). You could 2 things: make the action they’re doing difficult to discourage them from doing it(or if you don’t mind, just say they can’t do it), or have their actions somehow connect to the main story you have going
