This creature is called a Scrakit, which is pronounced skra-kih-t. They live in the cold, flat grounds around mountain ranges and have adapted over time to fit the arduous lifestyle that they have to face. Hundreds of years ago they came from the warmer climates in the grasslands with thin fur and shorter ears, and because their food source disappeared due to an unknown cause, they had to move on. Over time they developed bunny-like ears and a thicker coat of fur to help them, and this process of becoming more adept nearly caused them extinction. But, here they are, thriving in groups and living still.

Food and Hunting Skills

Scrakits are omnivores, which means they eat both plants and other organisms. In the warmer seasons they mainly eat berries that grow off of bushes and leaves, and when colder times approach they eat a ton of meat so they can store fat. That includes hares and rabbits, rats, moles, other small animals, and occasionally baby birds. When it’s winter they don’t eat much because animals are hiding and plants are too cold and they rely on the gained fat to help them out. When winter ends the cycle starts again.

They hunt in groups, or plainly stated as with the others in their bunch. When it’s still warm out Scrakits will gather food and then meet up again, sharing what they’ve gained with others, and when it gets colder that changes. They will go out all in a group instead of separating to hunt and track down an animal. Then, they’ll kill it. Since they don’t have a ranking system they’ll all eat together and if one doesn’t have enough fat they’ll be forced to hunt by themselves in order to store plenty. Newborns and young Skrakits get fed by adults evenly.

Surviving the Cold

From the moment they are born they start to develop a thick layer of fur. At birth, which happens in summer, they have a minuscule layer and as the weeks go by it gets more and more visible until the point where it’s fully grown out. Skrakits also have fur in their ears which isn’t too visible and doesn’t interfere with their hearing skills at all. It’s so their ears don’t numb to the point where they can’t use them anymore. When a group of Skrakits get too cold they’ll huddle into a group and wrap their tails around others for warmth. When this happens they can’t hunt since going alone would mean death and even in groups it would be utterly freezing, so this is when they use their stored fat. Their tails also play an important part in surviving. With the two tails they can communicate over long distances since they can light up the rings on them when their sounds aren’t loud enough. The sounds include repetitive chirping and barking, but since their throats can get truly cold in the freezing winters they’ll switch to using their tails.

Social Groups

Skrakits survive in groups. Normally these groups, or herds, are made up of family and not other lines mixed in, but sometimes you can find them intertwined. If a group were to die off and be left to below four of the species they will travel around and find another herd to . Since Skrakits are docile to others of their kind, they will automatically be accepted. In the wild the range of these social group’s will be around five to twelve of them, barely anymore or less. The larger the herd is the more successful it is, in most . The smaller the less food gathered. If two groups were to find each other somehow, they will not fight and will instead stay on good since the species doesn’t claim land. In most cases they will help the other if it’s weak and, if they’re both well, they’ll just separate and go to other parts of the area because if too many of them are at one point it can destroy the food supply. In serious times the two or more herds that have met will fight. This is normally when everyone is starving and has an exceedingly low chance because Skrakits are kind with other species as said before. It will not be to the death though; it would be until one herd surrenders. Until then they’ll fight so both of them don’t die off completely.

Description on Looks

They are creatures that look like rabbits with completely gray fur all over. They’re light gray around the snout, ear fluff, and sometimes on all four of their paws or tail tip. There is yellow inside of their ears, on the two to three rings on their tails, and on their mane, that usually also has orange mixed in or a lighter shade of yellow. Scrakits can also have a different color to replace that, but it can’t be darker than the main fur color. Also, they have tiny black dots. These dots are like a snow leopard’s and are most of the time on their shoulders, hind legs, and backs. They also have black stripes that are slightly jagged horizontally that go on their ear exteriors, paws, and tails, but can also be on their back instead of the spots. Their ears go straight up and never can be sideways unless bent due to attack, injury, or serious starvation which can make their looks awry. Scrakit claws are short on their paws and are silver as well. To add on, paws normally have black or dark gray padding with fur fluffing up around the said padding with four toes each. Lastly, two rings on their tails look metallic and are, but are extremely light and are practically attached to their tails, not floating around them as they seem.

Extra Scrakit Facts

They’re only 6 inches tall at birth but a fully grown Skrakit can be up to 5’2” at the maximum, which includes their ears. Their tails are normally about 6-8 inches longer than their height. Groups of them are called herds, and these herds don’t have a particular home or somewhere to reside at, so they follow their food sources around the northern mountain ranges. Occasionally you can find groups that aren’t nomadic. They will make burrows like rabbits in the snow and ground and they will operate like that during the cold seasons. When the weather is warmer the Skrakits will normally remain out of the said burrows, gathering food. In early summer it’s mating season for the species and they, of course, will mate and then have litters of up to three, though it rarely ever reaches that. A female will only have a litter once in her life, which is why the count of a herd doesn’t reach too high up. If the herd count does reach too high, though, it will split into two groups and spread apart so the food source once again doesn’t wear out. Once a litter of Scrakits is born a female will keep them close to her for two months, providing warmth, milk, and food when they get old enough. After those two months they’ll be taught and shown how to both hunt and gather for themselves and others once adults.

Sorry that this isn’t too good... I tried even when I didn’t feel like drawing and it still came out bad.
