Everybody loves fall for different reasons.
For some, it's the sound of the crisp crunching of leaves that fall from the trees. The trees showing they’re ready to take a long sleep through winter and going into sleep mode. The cold air that soon follows after the last leaf falls, hinting at the soon to be looming frost. Some like the exotic flavors of pumpkins, caramel apples, candy corn, and other flavors that seem to only arise when the nights get longer. Besides flavors, there's always the last harvest from fruits, vegetables, and berries alike before the cold air stalls the plants in their places. Of course, there are the plants that finally bloom before winter creeps in like squash, and everyone's favorite, the pumpkin.
White, orange, green, black, yellow- so many color combinations to gather. Tiny, small, medium, large- so many sizes to choose from. Bumpy, smooth, shapes like a hook, shaped like a muffin, misshapen- so many shapes to search for. Needless to say, there were many different colors, shapes, and sizes of pumpkins to choose from that everyone had their own idea of what they wanted.
Izuku couldn't help but to love what he claimed to be the, “absolute perfect pumpkin.” A medium sized white pumpkin with a small stalk, no bumps, no holes, no dirt, and weighing just the right amount. His fingers would trace each line, fingertips rolling over the perfectly smooth and round surface. He'd tap against it, listening to the soft and hallow sound that echoed off its shell. The teen couldn't help but to litter his room with these perfect white pumpkins. Along his bookshelf, across the floor, by the edge of his bed, next to his collection of All Might, his entire room filled with what he envisioned as the perfect pumpkin.
Katsuki on the other hand loved the misshapen pumpkins. Long and green with white spots, shaped like a fish hook. Small and yellow, squished with bumpy spikes, shaped like a muffin. Even the ugly green ones with yellow and white spots that sounded like a rattle. He never went to the extent that Izuku did when it came to littering his entire room with, "perfect" white pumpkins, but he did have a few of the ugly pumpkin gourds in his room on his table.
When it came to carving pumpkins, it was a completely different story. Izuku never carved his perfect white pumpkins, and Katsukis pumpkins were far too small or too misshapen to get a decent sized face. So instead of carving, they painted them.
Izukus white pumpkins was the absolute perfect canvas. For the most part, the color went through easily. Beautiful shades of blue, orange, red, green, and purple echoed across the pumpkin. He could make faces, scenery, monsters, or animals with ease. Katsuki always had to get a bit creative when it came to painting his pumpkins. The darker green ones obviously took a bit of trouble when it came to painting a precise picture, and some where too bumpy to get a nice colorful streak on it. Either way, it was a tradition that both teens actively participated in. Sweet mother Inko would constantly gather pumpkins of all shapes and sizes to be carved or painted at her house. Mitsuki and Masura would come, dragging their son to the green-haired women’s small house. Both families would actively slice and dice pumpkins for a few hours, drinking apple cider, eggnog, and enjoying each other’s company.
It wasn’t till the teens were around 13 before they were able to pick their own pumpkins. The only problem was that they didn’t want to slice their pumpkins. So that was when Mitsuki offered the idea of painting them, and this grew into the challenge of, “who can paint the better pumpkin?”
It was, at times, very intense. Katsuki would practice blending colors on his own with his small pumpkins, so when he went back to the pumpkin patch, he’d be able to pick the perfect one. Izuku practiced as well, but his white pumpkins were far easier to paint and he needed less practice. It’s not like it mattered anyway, Katsuki always won. However he managed to do it, it was always downright horrifying what he painted on his pumpkin.
Tonight was October 30th, and both boys were currently on the train headed to Izukus home at 8pm sharp. It was chilly, the wind brushed against Izukus messy hair as he stepped off, causing the smaller of the two to duck into his striped red and black scarf his best friend got him. The matching mittens were barely exposed for anyone to see, hidden securely underneath his boyfriends long black hoodie. He had his bright red shoes, as well sleek black denim pants that clung to his body. His bright green eyes flashed upwards to look at his boyfriend.
Sharp red eyes didn’t meet his, a soft, “tch.” Coming out of his mouth as he stepped off, slipping his hand into his back pocket, “you need to wear warmer clothing. M’not gonna keep lettin’ ya steal all my clothes, stupid Deku.”
The explosive male simply had a loose u-necked white shirt underneath a light grey sweater. He had slightly looser black shredded up jean-pants to show off parts of his legs, and then simple black levies. Izuku pouted a bit, shaking his head as they walk, “Kacchan, you have three layers of shirts on and it’s only 69 degrees out here.”
”My quirk requires sweat, I have to be warm at all times.” Katsuki replied swiftly, beating down that excuse quickly, “doesn’t mean you get the right to steal my hoodie.”
”I didn’t think I was gonna be cold.” Izuku muttered quietly, leaning against him a bit as they stopped at a crosswalk. He tapped the button, and the two waited for the light to flash before crossing.
”You never think.” Katsuki replied casually.
”Yes I do! More than you!” Izuku defended. Katuski gave him a disbelieved look, “did you even check the weather?”
Izuku paused and looked away, “I did earlier. It said 76.”
”/earlier/ huh?” Katsuki questioned, “so no. You did not check the weather before leaving. It’s supposed to drop four more degrees.”
“I’ll give you you’re hoodie back later tonight then.” Izuku stated with a small thumbs up.
“It proboly stinks. Wash it. That way when I rewash it I wont have to smell you.”
“So heartless.” Izuku sighed with a headshake, letting his hand fall back down to his side, “so what are you painting on your pumpkin?”
Katsuki glanced at him, “why do you wanna know? You gonna try and steal m’ideas? No fuckin’ way, Deku. Piss off and die.”
Izuku huffed at that response, an eyeroll following, “fine. What do you wanna talk about what you’re dressing as for the Halloween party tomorrow?”
Katsuki clicked his tongue, “either a barbarian or a werewolf. Kirishima told me he was going to dress as a dragon with dunce-face, Soy Sauce, and raccoon eyes. So, I decided to be the King. The king of dragons, or I can say fuck them and let them be in their own little group while I go rouge and be a werewolf.”
”You should be a barabian! It sounds like you’ve done more planning-“ he moved his hands across his torso teasingly, “you’re going to go shirtless too right? I’d love to see how, “manly” you are.” He stated in such a sly and mischivious tone.
Katsuki scooped up his gloved hand, giving it a light kiss, “maybe I will, but not because of your own opinion.”
A light smile crossed his face, chuckling afterwards, “whatever you say Kacchan. I’m going as a ghost.”
”Sounds stupid.” Was Katsukis simple response, “but hey, as long as you don’t wear anything other than a sheet…” He trailed off, earing a light slap, “I’m going to be wearing clothes!” Izuku stated swiftly.
The rest of the walk continued with light banter, eventually the two ended up stopping at Inkos apartment. They headed up the stairs, arriving there. Izuku cheerfully pulled away from his boyfriend, knocking against the door. Katsukis hand moved into his own pockets, thumb sticking out and leaning on his leg as he hunched over slightly, waiting patiently for the very cheerful mother to answer the door. Surprisingly, it wasn’t actually Inko that answered, but Mitsuki. The blonde woman was in a light white blouse, soft blue sweatpants, and light blue slippers, “Katsuki, Izuku!” She greeted, allowing them in. She turned towards the living room, “the boys are here!” She called. Izuku stepped in, a smile on his face as he moved over to hug his mom who was situated in a very casual outfit much like Mitsuki, “hi mom.” He leaned back up, “hi auntie. Where’s uncle?”
”Oh he was too sick.” Mitsuki stated with a small shake of her head, “a common cold. I offered to stay, but he told me to head over.” She smiled, “so at least he’s not feeling so sick he needs to be bed-rested.”
”That is a relief.” Izuku stated, watching Katsuki sit down. He happily sat down besides him, only to get pulled up into the blondes’ house. The teen leaned forward, placing his chin against Izukus collar bone, hands wrapping around his waist, “when are we paintin’ pumpkins?”
Inko shook her head, “this time, we’re not painting. We’re going to go old school and carve them, which is why we told you not to bring a pumpkin this time.”
The boys both looked a bit dumfounded. All that planning this year only to be shattered? Really? Izuku immediately pipped up, “can I get first pick?”
”Shitty nerd.” His boyfriend mumbled in his ear, eyes glancing towards the group of pumpkins settled on the floor, “you pick that white pumpkin you’re gonna loose.”
Izuku looked towards him the best he could, “I get first pick.” He said simply, watching Mitsuki sit down on the ground by the batch. There was one giant orange pumpkin, a bumpy tan one, a decently sized tall white one, and then a very simple small orange one. Katsuki rolled his eyes, watching Izuku scoot off his lap and onto the floor by Mitsuki. He cheerfully pulled the white pumpkin towards him, watching Katsuki slip down onto the bare floor and pull over the largest orange one. Mitsuki snagged the tan, and then Inko pulled the tan one to her. It was Mitsuki who got up and headed off to retrieve four glasses of apple cider on a small serving tray, four separate carving kits still in their packages, and then a trash can. The drinks were settled close to her chest, trashcan in one hand, and kits tucked under her arm. Izuku helped her quickly, taking the kits from underneath her arms and ing them out with a smile. Once the trashcan was in position and the drinks had been ed out, it was caving time.
All four of them begun to open their kits, Katsuki a bit rougher and popping it open so his tools scattered a bit on the floor. Izuku chuckled, much neater and allowing his tools to fall in front of him. The two women opened theirs much more quietly, Izuku digging his largest tool into the top of the pumpkin. It hit its shell and not make any dents. There was a slight pause before Katsuki casually jammed the jagged metal tool into the carving kit. It sunk down slowly, satisfying slicing the entire top of the pumpkin off with only a few jagged slices.
Izuku mimicked him, slicing the top off. He started to carefully pull out the guts of his pumpkin, hand becoming slimy and squishy as he wrinkled his nose. He watched Katsuki carefully dig out the pumpkin guts with the scooper tool he was given. Izuku watched, pulling the guts out with his hands and plopping them into the shared trashcan. Their mothers hadn’t gotten too far, just now getting their tops off as they lightly chatted. Izuku smiled at the homey feeling in the air, only to pull out a few of the pumpkin seeds and fling them at Katsuki.
The blondes cheek got pelted with the seeds. He stalled, looking at Izuku before reaching into the pumpkin, eyes locked onto Izuku, and flinging a handful of the slimy orange mess at his boyfriend. Izuku took the hit, not wanting to hit his mother’s coffee table or furniture, “Kacchan!”
Mitsuki leaned forward and slapped the blondes head, “do not throw you brat!”
”Shut up hag he did it first!” Katsuki snapped, turning to look at Izuku who looked a bit disgusted at the amount of pumpkin guts on his jacket, “looks like this is my jacket now.”
Katsuki didn’t argue, grumbling before he wiped his hand off on his pants, continuing to work with the scooper. Izuku continued to use his hands, both of them casually cleaning out their pumpkins while their mothers did the same. Light conversation arose while they talked, the moms asking questions about how school was going and their friends. The boys answered as they cleaned their pumpkins. It took about 15 minutes to properly degut the pumpkins for all four of them. That is when the carving begun.
Izuku started to saw his pumpkin, cutting out two round eyes with small pupils coming from the center of its eyes. He cut out a long-crooked mouth with multiple blades of sharp teeth. He gave it an upside down heart nose, and ears along the side.
Katsuki created a three eyed monster, choosing not to add pupils. He had three eyes that looked similar to his own, two along the sides and one above them. He gave it no nose, but an ungodly twisted mouth that resembled the Cheshire cats long twisted smile, topped with a curl to his lip.
Inko made a very simplistic cat face, having given up halfway through just so she could enjoy her warm cider and watch tv while the boys carved. The Nightmare Before Christmas started to play on tv, causing Mitsuki to quit as well and her. This tradition was often based around the boys anyway.
When they were both done, Izuku and Katsuki carried their pumpkins outside, grabbing small tealight candles and placing them inside. It was late now, sometime around nine thirty. Izuku was crouched, match in hand as he lit the two pumpkins. Katsuki watched casually, watching Izuku shake out the match before slipping the two pumpkin tops on. Izuku stood up, backing up to stand with him.
There was a long pause as they stared at the two pumpkins. Katsuki finally speaking up, “mines better,” he paused, “but yours looks slightly better than shit this time.”
Izuku lit up at the praise, “really??”
Katsuki grumbled and moved closer, wrapping his arm around his shoulders, “I said /slightly/ better. Doesn’t mean its good.”
Izuku chuckle absentmindedly, “you like it.”
Katsuki tisked, “I do.”
