Chapter One – The Final Vestige

The dream began the same way it always did.

A field of white. Endless, perfect white. No wind. No sun. No sound. Just light stretching in all directions—soft, warm, and weightless. It wasn’t peace. It was pause. A moment suspended between breaths, like the world had forgotten how to move.

Jesse stood in the center of it, as he always did, boots pressing faint impressions into the non-space beneath him. The air here wasn’t real. Neither was gravity. But the presence—their presence—was.

Nine silhouettes in a loose arc ahead of him. Tall, short, broad, narrow. Men and women, old and young. The past lives of Eternal Genesis, each shaped by the time they came from, each carrying the power in their own way. They didn’t speak. They never did. Yet Jesse felt them watching. Waiting. ing.

Tonight was different.

One of them stepped forward.

The First. The original bearer. The one whose soul anchored the whole chain. He was taller than Jesse ed—maybe it was the way the light curved around him, or the weight of centuries woven into his posture. He didn’t glow, not like the others. He burned. A quiet, steady flame of something older than Quirks themselves.

His voice, when it came, sounded like thunder muffled beneath ocean depths. It didn’t come from his mouth—it echoed inside Jesse’s chest.

“You are the end of the line.”

Jesse felt his pulse spike.

The words hit harder than they should’ve. He’d always known there was something final about his role. Something conclusive. But to hear it from him—to have it confirmed—was something else entirely.

“But you do not have to be.”

The field trembled. The edges of the dream darkened, as if the light itself recoiled. The other eight lifted their heads for the first time, faces indistinct but alive. There was no anger in them. No fear. Only a strange, sorrowful recognition.

The dream cracked.

Jesse fell through it.

---

He gasped awake, lungs straining, heart pounding hard enough to rattle his ribs. The city buzzed faintly outside his window—neon glow cutting shadows across his bedroom walls. The hum of distant cars, the occasional whoosh of a ing train. Tokyo at 3:42 AM. Alive and untouched.

His sheets were damp. His shirt clung to him. His hands trembled against the mattress.

It had never gone that far before.

Usually the dreams ended when he spoke. Or when they reached out. But this time… the field had broken. And that voice—You are the end of the line—still echoed inside his skull like a song stuck on repeat.

He stood, crossing to the window. The skyline spread out beneath him, glittering and serene. People were sleeping. Living. Laughing. Dying. And here he was, caught in the middle of something ancient, something so much larger than himself.

Eternal Genesis.

The Quirk that had chosen him.

Or maybe… the Quirk that needed him.

He touched the glass, eyes distant. In the reflection, he saw flickers behind his own—shapes. Faces. Glimpses of the others, lingering like phantoms. They were getting louder. Stronger. And sometimes, when he blinked, he swore he could feel their emotions leaking into his own—rage, grief, courage, guilt. Centuries of memory bleeding into the present.

He wasn’t just carrying a legacy anymore.

He was becoming it.

---

Later that morning, he sat across from a familiar face in a quiet café tucked between the cracks of the city. A mentor. A friend. Someone who knew about the Quirk’s lineage, but not everything.

“I think it’s ending with me,” Jesse said quietly, hands wrapped around a cup of black coffee that had long gone cold. “I think… the Quirk doesn’t want to be ed on anymore.”

The silence that followed was thicker than the air around them.

“What makes you say that?” the older hero asked gently.

Jesse looked down. “They told me. The others. In the dream. The First said I’m the end.”

A beat.

“Do you want to be the end?”

Jesse didn’t answer.

Because he didn’t know.
