            “Yami.”

Katsuki murmurs the name, the syllables curling around his tongue like a secret meant for no one else. Not that it matters—they’re still in class, stuck in the quiet hum of study hall, surrounded by their classmates.

            “…Yamiiii.”

His chin rests against his palm as he whines the name again, eyes fixed on the soft, messy strands of black hair that wave down like cryptic branches. He watches the way they shift when Yamikumo turns away.

            “Not now, Katsuki. I’m busy.”

Oh? The response is casual, almost dismissive—but Katsuki doesn’t miss the way Yamikumo’s shoulders tense beneath his uniform, the way his fingers twitch ever so slightly over the pages of his book. It’s subtle—so subtle no one else would notice.

            Katsuki isn’t everyone else.

He watches Yamikumo like he’s studying something delicate, something that might disappear if he blinks too long. And maybe he is. Yamikumo has always been like that—slipping between the cracks, fading into the background when no one’s looking.

Too bad Katsuki is always looking.

His fingers trace absently over the pages of his own book, though he isn’t reading. Instead, he listens—to the rustle of Yamikumo’s sleeves as he moves, to the sigh that escapes his lips when he turns a page, to the soft, barely-there sound of him swallowing. Then—

            He actually leaves.

The realization sinks in slowly, creeping through him like a rising tide. His gaze flicks to the empty space where Yamikumo had been, to the chair that still holds the ghost of his presence.

Katsuki’s lips part, a quiet exhale slipping free. Then, he smiles—a slow, curling thing, all teeth and dark amusement.

Yamikumo thinks he can just walk away? Cute.

Leaning back in his chair, Katsuki tilts his head, eyes locked on the classroom door as if willing him to return.

            He doesn’t.

            For now.

Today was supposed to be different. Theirs and theirs alone.

Last year, it had been Katsuki who asked. And honestly, it was practically a crime to expect someone as shy and reclusive as Yami to take the lead this time.

“Ne, Yami… what would you do if I told you I wanted you all to myself today?”

The words had been playful, laced with something heavier—something that made Yamikumo hesitate before answering.

“I’d probably ask why today’s so special.”

            “Hah? Dumbass, don’t play stupid. It’s Valentine’s.”

            “And?”

And? Katsuki had clicked his tongue, irritation sparking. But he hadn’t pushed. Not then.

This guy was impossible sometimes. Good thing Katsuki had the self-proclaimed patience of a saint, right?

But this year—this year, he wasn’t going to ask. This year, Yamikumo was going to say it first.

Katsuki wanted to hear it. Wanted to hear his name in that dark voice of surrender, wanted to watch him stumble over the words, wanted to catch that tiny flicker of nervousness in his expression when he realized there was no escape.

            Because there wasn’t.

            Not from Katsuki.

            Not from him.

The sound of a chair scraping against the floor snaps him out of his thoughts.

            And there he is.

            Yamikumo.

Sitting there, hesitant, as if he hadn’t just left him waiting. His eyes are closed, brows furrowed, lips pursed in a grumpy frown that practically radiates annoyance.

Katsuki’s smile doesn’t waver. If anything, it stretches wider—slow, knowing. Like a cat that’s cornered a particularly skittish mouse.

            Yamikumo swallows.

“Hey… you uh… wanna hang out after this?”

It’s clumsy, offhanded—not what Katsuki wanted. But he’s here, and that’s enough.

Though, naturally, it’s not like Katsuki to let Yamikumo off the hook so easily.

He hums, tapping his fingers against his cheek, drawing out the silence just to see Yamikumo uncomfortable in his own skin.

“Let me think…” A deliberate pause.

“Ugh, you really should’ve just asked me out properly, y’know? That was so lame, I almost want to laugh, but I pity you too much! Maybe I should’ve taken up Yuuchan’s proposal… “

Yamikumo blinks, his face shifting into that quiet, unreadable look Katsuki hates—that distance, that half-there, half-gone expression but there was danger and fear in his eyes at the thought of someone else getting to be with Katsuki.

            “There’s no need!”

Baited. Katsuki leans in with a grin, close to laughing at the poor guy before him.

“Calm down, I already decided. So sure, let’s hang out.”

And this time, when Yamikumo looks at him, Katsuki knows—

            He won’t run.

            Not this time.

            Katsuki got his way. Again.
