Hello, it’s your friendly neighbourhood Lotte, here to tell you about straight pride. A subject that comes up frequently around the same time as pride month. So I thought to get to the bottom of this phenomenon and make a post about it.

Straight pride is a slogan that has been used primarily by social conservative groups as a political stance and strategy. This slogan arose in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The term is used as a response to gay pride, which is, as many of you know, adopted by LGBT groups in the early 1970s.

It’s mostly used to ridicule the pride parades.

If you look at the concept of LGBT pride, it is a movement which challenges the negative images of LGBT people by openly identifying with a culturally stigmatised group.

So in this context, straight pride is more of an argument that criticises gay pride as unnecessary. It stating that heterosexuals in contrast with LGBT “don’t talk about straight pride” and “don’t have straight pride rallies”. It would be seen as ridiculous if they banded together and have a heterosexual pride.
