Storytime: Coming Out To My Friend

Hey guys, gals, and everyone in between! It’s me, Lucky! So, I think you all have heard the story about how I came out to my family as lesbian. (If you didn’t see it, the link is right queer! ) Anywho, bad gay jokes aside, I decided to come out to one of my closest friends at my school. For privacy reasons, he will be referred to as A throughout this story.

So, A and I have been friends since the 8th grade, and during that time, we have grown pretty close. He had never really found interest in anything that had to do with romance, and was almost, dare I say it, humorously repulsed by it. There was one thing he and I did have in common, besides the fact we were both total nerds. We both LOVED to read and write.

So, recently, he has ‘appointed’ me as his self-proclaimed editor of sorts for a book we’re co-writing. In this story, I noticed something really intriguing. I turned to him, reading over some of the chapters, and said, “You’ve included same-sex couples.”

He shrugged, “The story is set in, like… Millions of years in the future. I’m pretty sure same-sex marriage would be the least of Earth’s problems.”

I nodded, continue to read on. He noticed that I seemed to get all giddy when reading about these same-sex ships/couples. One day, during lunch, I sat down with him in the library, and took out a journal. In it, was a short coming out letter I had jotted down the night before. We read it together, and after we were done, A turned to me and said with a wide grin, “So THAT’S why you were giggling so much when reading my book.”

I nodded, blushing a bit. “I wanted to tell you… You probably already suspected that… After all, I DID bring a queer novel to school for our English class.” (Side note: That novel happened to be 'Ash' by Malinda Lo. As of right now, it's one of my favorite books.)

He chuckled, “I it, I’m not one for romance, but with the book I’m writing, I think your knowledge of this kind of thing will be a lot of help…”

I blink, “What do you mean?”

A smiled, “Well, I was thinking about making one of the main side characters lesbian… Since you seem to be interested in those two characters in particular, maybe you’d like to help me in some of those chapters?”

I was overjoyed, “Are you kidding?” I cover my mouth as some people a table over looked at me. I said more quietly, “That would be awesome…”

So, that’s my storytime for today. As of right now A is the only one in my school’s social friend group that I’ve come out too. He promised to keep it a secret until I’m ready to tell the others. I hope you enjoyed! If you did, why not tell me in the comments below? I love hearing your !
