Introduction

Hey everybody! I’m Alecs, and for this week’s #takeover, we are going to be writing about some unique cat breeds. Today I will write about the Scottish Fold, an affectionate cat with cute folded ears! Without further ado, let’s get into it.

Overview

The Scottish Fold is a breed of cat originating from Tayside, Scotland. They have a lifespan of about 11 to 14 years. Females tend to be 6 to 9 pounds while males tend to be 9 to 13 pounds. Scottish Folds are energetic cats that show strong affection to family , and are good with kids as well as dogs. They enjoy anything with human interaction. Just like you, these cats’ ears are not straight! They are folded down.

Originating from the early 1960’s, these cats quickly became a favorite of many and were imported to the United States a decade later. William Ross bred this cat, beginning with a cat named Susie who had folded down ears.

Care

Just like other cats, this cat should have a diet of both wet and dry food. You will need to keep your cat well groomed, and be sure to comb its hair weekly. You will also want to brush its teeth and trim its nails. Wipe the corner of its eyes in order to remove discharge, and check/clean its ears weekly.

It is very important to have pet insurance if you can, these cats are prone to degenerative t disease, polycystic kidney disease, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a type of heart disease.

These cats care about their bathroom hygiene, so be sure to keep a perfectly clean litter box. It’s good to buy your cat a teaser toy, this cat breed enjoys many both teaser toys and puzzle toys. In fact, they will expect you to play with them every once in a while. It’s also good to keep this cat as an indoor cat, so don’t let it out too much, and try to entertain it at home as best as you can.
