Mermaids

Today I will be talking about Mermaids! What is a mermaid?

A mermaid is an aquatic creature. Meaning they live underwater. They typically have the upper half as a woman and the lower half as a fish, a tail. There are such things are mermans too. They have upper body of a man and lower body of a tail of a fish.

They come from folk tale of the near east, Europe, Asia, and Africa.

As I said, there is such thing as a merman however it is lest common than stories of mermaids. Their whole species is sometimes considered as mer people.

From the greek era they were viewed as half bird like but then when the Christians era came along they were deemed as half fish like.

There was historical s were made by Christopher Columbus. He stated he saw alot of manatees during his exploration. However there is no solid proof of Mermaids besides in Folktale.

Almost In all of the Folktales they are seen with a torso of a woman and the lower half of the creature has a tail of a fish.

All except when it was first believed they were bird like until the chrisan era.

The Godess Atargatis loved a mortal. However she unintentionally killed him. She was very ashamed and deeply saddened that she jumped into a lake and turned into a fish.

The water didnt consume her whole beauty. So she became a Mermaid. Human on top fish below.

Another story of a Mermaid was created. However it was about Alexandra the great sister.

In britian and Irelenad their folktales perceived mermaids as unlucky omens. They were able to see disaster before it happening but unable to stop it.

The best known example of mermaids is by Hans Christian Anderson Fairy tale.

The Fairytale that was created is commonly known as "The Little Mermaid"

In short: The king of the Ocean and the daughters are stuck waiting for the main character. The main character was late to her own party due to sitting on a rock above the water. There she say a human. The human was a prince and she instantly fell in love with him. Later she visits a sea witch who grants her legs in price of her voice. However unlic the classic cartoon lots of us grew up to, in this story she must kill the prince before the marriage in order to live. She doesnt and she es away.
