Hello LGBT+ Amino, tis your fellow bisexual here and today I’m going to tell you all about Jazz Jennings, an trans rights activist. Without any further ado, let’s begin.

Who is Jazz Jennings?

Jazz Jennings was born on the 6th October 2000 and is an trans rights activist. She first garnered attention in 2007, after an interview with Barbara Walters on 20/20 hit national news.

Jazz was assigned male at birth but she knew from a young age that she was female. She was diagnosed with gender dysphoria at age 3, making her one of the youngest people ever to be documented.

Since her interview with Barbara Walter, Jazz has done tons of things to raise awareness for LGBT+ youths.

In 2007 Jazz, along with her parents, founded TransKids Purple Rainbow Foundation, an organisation for young trans people. They are committed to helping fund research, help educate schools on transgender kids, and fighting for rights for trans kids. They aid homeless children, providing them with healthcare funds and scholarships.

In 2013 Jazz founded Purple Rainbow Tails. This was a company that created mermaid tails, in an effort to raise money to transgender children.

Jazz also fought the United States Soccer Federation for two and a half years, in an attempt to allow herself and other trans students to play on the teams they belonged to. And it worked! She was aided by the National Center for Lesbian Rights in her battle, and in the end the USSF changed their policies and allowed trans students to play which is a huge win!

In 2017, the Tonner Doll Company released a doll modelled after Jazz. This was huge! It was the first doll to be marketed as transgender in all of history. This doll shows young children that it’s fine to be transgender! They are who they are and it’s okay!

In that same year, Jazz voiced a transgender character, Zadie, in the animated series Danger & Eggs on Amazon Video. Her character sings about acceptance and further helps the protagonists. Jazz described the whole experience as “groundbreaking”. She said the role was “significant, meaningful, powerful, and special” especially since it took place at a Pride event. If you saw one of my previous posts about LGBT+ representation in media, this is one of the positive examples!! Transgender people 100% need more positive representation.

Furthermore in 2018, Jazz starred in the short movie Denim, a movie that focused on transgender teen Micayla and what events followed after a former friend leaked a photo of her in the girls’ bathroom. This movie’s message was universal, it raised awareness on how ignorance can ruin a teenager’s life.
