At my job, whenever a supervisor welcomes kids in for their swim lessons, the greeting used is "Aloha families, it is now time for your swim lesson. Please us out on the pool deck". Today I learned though, that we aren't supposed to say aloha, cuz apparently it's cultural appropriation to do so. Instead we're supposed to say hi, hello, or welcome.
Now I'm not 100% sure who decided that saying aloha was cultural appropriation, but my guess is that it was the owners, a white couple. I'm not Hawaiian myself as far as I know, but I have never once heard of any Hawaiian getting offended by a non-Hawaiian saying aloha. As far as my knowledge goes, aloha is used when you're either saying hello or goodbye to someone. If saying hello or goodbye to someone is offensive now, then the world is more fucked than I thought.
I mean next thing you know it'll be considered offensive to hola if you aren't Hispanic, bonjour if you aren't French, or ciao if you aren't Italian.
