      ⌜

Hello HPA! Today, I’ll be offering

my take on the Azkaban debate.

            The controversy surrounding the

           prison system, especially now, has

           always been a disputable subject

for many, and Azkaban is no

            exception. I’ll be arguing against

Azkaban, as I believe it is cruel,

            inhumane, and outdated. To offer

           some background, the Azkaban

            prison system was established

            around 1718 when Damocles

Rowle was Minister of Magic. It’s

located on an Island in the middle

of the North Sea and is known for

           being impenetrable with the

           exception of only two known

           escapees: Barty Crouch Jr and

           Sirius Black. The atrocities in

            Azkaban may help the wizarding

population feel secure, but at what

           cost for inmates, especially innocent

           ones?

˖⋆࿐໋₊ ; trauma

     ─────────

    People who have gone through

           the horrors of Azkaban come

           out of it with permanent

            scars and experiences that

haunt them for the rest of their

lives, and that’s only if they

manage to get out. I wouldn’t

be surprised if they had PTSD

or a similar disorder. In some

            instances, their hope for any

            happiness in life might have

            been taken away permanently

due to long term exposure to

            Dementors and they would

have no will to continue living.

            Instead of coming out as

            someone who had gone

            through the repercussions of

            their crime and understand

what they did was wrong, they

           will come out as something

            isn’t a human, a body without

            a soul. Rather than helping

            society, as the purpose of

            prison is, it will decrease

            morality and introduce people

who are shells of their former

selves. Prison is meant to be

a type of punishment in itself,

but if it doesn’t teach criminals

            anything or provide a

            punishment fit for the crime,

            then Azkaban is an inhumane

           and cruel way to punish

            wrongdoing.

˖⋆࿐໋₊ ; justice system

     ─────────

    At many points throughout

           wizarding history, criminals

            were put in Azkaban without

           trial,   including the infamous

            Sirius Black and many muggle

           borns under Dolores Umbridge.

            Establishing a fair justice system

is a big part of reform and is

            essential in putting criminals in

            jail. The justice system should

            protect the innocent and convict

            and properly punish the guilty.

The justice system is not limited

           to the court, however. Law

            enforcement should be fair as

well, and should not treat anyone

           cruelly. Everyone is innocent until

proven guilty and should be treated

           as such.

˖⋆࿐໋₊ ; dementors

     ─────────

    Dementors are creatures that

            inflict sadness and hopelessness

           wherever they go. Some could

argue that they are the physical

           manifestation of depression. So

does every criminal who gets put

           in Azkaban deserve to face

            Dementors during their entire

            sentence? If Azkaban is the

            only punishment for criminals,

            how would you punish lesser

           misdemeanours? It is cruel to

treat them the same was as

            felonies are treated. Not only

            that, Dementors are creatures

that do not have loyalty. They

            guard Azkaban for selfish

reasons: to feed off the prisoners

and avoid being wiped out. They

do not believe in any form of

            justice, only punishment. As

            shown in the Second Wizarding

            War, when they switched to

            Voldemort’s side, they cannot

be the only method of keeping

            in criminals. While keeping

Dementors in a remote area was

a good idea, using them as prison

            guards has proven to provide

            inhumane living conditions for

            all prisoners, regardless of the

            crime.

            Azkaban is almost equivalent

to the death penalty; many of

it’s victims die of dispair. The

            only difference is that the

            death penalty is quicker and

more merciful than living a life

            without any hope or happiness,

            and coming out of Azkaban

            feeling drained of almost all

            emotion except depression

            and longing for something

            prisoners no longer know

            how to feel.

˖⋆࿐໋₊ ; reform

     ─────────

    Almost every prison system

            has room for reform. Without

it, it will become outdated and

           eventually unjust. Having a

            justice system   that   is

            completely unbiased and offers

a fair sentence fit to the crime

            is important for reform. Factors

such as race, blood status, or

            anything that leaves room for

            prejudice should not play any

role in the trial. Corrupt justice

           systems could lead to innocent

victims being put in the prison

            system, such as Sirius Black.

Without trial, it should not be

            possible to instantly blame

            someone for the crime,

            regardless of the amount of

            evidence stacked against

            them. If dementors must be

            kept, perhaps they can be

kept in a special part of

            Azkaban for the prisoners

            that have done unspeakable

            crimes, similar to Tartarus

            in the Underworld mentioned

           in Greek mythology. Wiping

            out an entire species would

be cruel, even if they are

            malicious degenerates, and

            should be avoided if possible.

I suggest moving them to a

            remote place inaccessible

            by muggles and magic folk

            alike to avoid unfortunate

            encounters.

            If Dementors are abolished,

            replace them with Aurors.

            The Auror system is much

            better than Dementor

            system due to Aurors

            focused on justice rather

            than sucking all happiness

            and hope out of souls.

            Aurors can be trained

           to tell good from evil

            and value justice.

           There always are and should

           be alternative punishments.

           Azkaban should not be the

           only form of punishment,

but one of many. In most

           cases, it is overly harsh

           and unjust to send every

           criminal   to   Azkaban

           regardless of the degree

           of the crime. Rehabilitation

          programs are vital for

           reintroducing previously

           convicted criminals back

          into society and be an

active member of it. It can

          help prevent them from

           committing that crime

           again and allow them to

           grow into someone they

          are happy to be.

I always wonder, what would happen if a child was born in Azkaban?

I don’t think that would be likely because if they had seen a women was pregnant, they’d take precautions to make sure the child was delivered safely and sent somewhere they can be raised properly
