Hello my fellow HPA ,

and welcome to my blog post!

Today, instead of revisiting an

old Weekend Challenge, I have

decided to look back on an

old Debate topic. A few years

back I used to compete in each

and every debate that I could,

and so, I wanted to check out

some of the ones that I missed!

Instead of 'picking a side' and

only talking about one side of

the argument, as the debates are

no longer live, I thought it would

be a good idea to talk about the

topic as a whole.

For my first revisit I have chosen

to go with this post which was

created by Aves back in 2020.

The Debate is about Bellatrix, and

whether she was drawn to Voldemort

because she genuinely agreed with

his ideologies and plans, or because

she herself simply wanted power.

Bellatrix was the treasured child of the

Black family for many years, she was

the eldest daughter of Druella and

Cygnus Black, with her two sisters

           Andromeda and Narcissa being younger

than her. With there being about 8 years

between her and Sirius' birth, for a good

majority of her youth she was the eldest

of the new Black generation, and would

have been seen as the newest heir to

her family - despite the fact that she

                         was a girl.

The Black family held very strong

                 prejudice beliefs regarding blood purity

in magical families, wealth and elitism,

                                      aswell as being fanatical regarding

keeping their family in these traditional

ways. To them, one of the most

important things that they held dear

        throughout the generations, was to

ensure that the family stayed pure and

did not mix any sort of muggle heritage

                                                 into their sacred blood.

So, when it was clear that Bellatrix

would have to serve as the Black

male heir, she surely would have been

treated as so. The young girl would

have been taught all of her family

                          traditions and values, as any

member of House Black, but she

would have surely been given even

more attention and responsabilities

than her sisters; being as valuable as

she was to her elders. Having such a

   weight placed upon her shoulders

would have left Bella feeling rather

important and powerful, like she was

in full control of her family and it's

future. She would have been given

authority, a lot of attention and the

responsability of House Black's future.

With the years rolling by, she would

inevitably one day become the head

of her house - a great honour I'm sure

              she would have welcomed with

       open arms.

All of Bellatrix's future plans would

soon however be thrawted with the

birth of her cousin Sirius Black. With

the family now having an official

male heir, Bella would no longer be

needed as the place holder her

family probably believed her to be.

Being knocked down to the same

level as her younger sisters, and now

only being viewed as a vessel to

continue on her family line, she would

have surely been envious. I imagine

that Bella would never have forgetten

the power her previous position had

granted her, and would try to do all

that she could to regain that sence

                                               of importance and control.

Nearing the end of her

       adolescence with the years ticking

by like seconds of a clock,

  Bellatrix's resentment was sure to

have grown bigger and bigger. Not

only resentment but envy and longing

for what she was once promised. By

the time she did become a Death

Eater and Lord Voldemort's forces,

all of this started to change as her

power dynamic began to revert to what

                       she had as a child.

She did the dark wizard in his

journey for power for the same

reasons as every other Death Eater - she

belived in his ideologies, she believe

in what he was striving to achieve, she

believed in HIM. After a while of show

her commitment not only to his cause

but to him as a person, I'm sure that

Voldemort would have picked up on

Bella and her devotion to him.

The longer that she served him and

the more devoted she became, Bellatrix

would have slowly grown up the ranks,

over time becoming one of the most

valuable and loyal Death Eaters. This

would have gifted her with some of - if

not more - power and responsabilities

similar to those she was promised as

           a young girl.

This factor would have been a very

huge point in her sticking around

Voldemort, but wasn't the sole reason

she was there. Bella believed in this way

of life and any witch or wizard in her

shoes and mindset, would have gone

down the same path. Regardless of any

empty promises that she had been told

by her family, Bella saw an opportunity to

make the magical world better in her

eyes and chose to follow it. The fact that

she regained some of that lost power

was just an added bonus as she

attempted to better the world for

                        herself and her family.
