Keeping it Cool

Well guys back in Febuary my radiator sprung a leak so of course I had to replace it. After a bit of research I decided to go with a Megan Racing full Aluminum radiator. This may seem extreme since I'm not racing the car or running any extreme mods but I do live in the south & the price difference wasn't that much so I figured I might as well upgrade while I was replacing it.

Overall the install was pretty easy even though the radiator was a tight squeeze since it is wider than the factory one. But everything bolted up as it should & slid right into place, as you can see in the picture below. I also replaced the cooling hoses while I was at it for good measure.... since install my engine has been running nice and cool with no issues.

Of course after the radiator was sorted out my Transmission started having a few issues over the summer.

So I hooked my trusty OBDII scanner up to it and came up with a code even though the CEL wasn't on.

As you can see P0720 was the code which comes up as a resolution sensor/speed sensor for my car. So of course I ordered that sensor but I also did a bit of research. Turns out these 4spd autos have a habit of running a bit hot especially during the summer when it's 100°F + outside. So I invested the $45 for a Hayden Transmission Oil Cooler kit.

The Speed Sensor

This was an easy unplug/unbolt of the old sensor and plug in and bolt in the new sensor after removing the driver side front wheel.

The Transmission Oil Cooler

The install of this was fairly easy as well but it definitely would've been much easier had I done it at the same time as the radiator so I could have had some more working room. However after running the lines from the built in trans cooler in the radiator to this secondary cooler & back to the transmission she was in!

As you can see I placed the cooler at the very front of the car on the A/C condenser for maximum cooling ability. I also ran it as a secondary cooler for the same reason. Shortly after install I took the car on a 800mi road trip to the Outerbanks & back. I was very impressed with how she handled it and everything stayed nice an cool. So I consider that a very successful fix for both the radiator and transmission. Since then I've put about 5k miles on her and she's done just fine so I believe the issues have been fully resolved.

Until next time guys... thanks for reading and stay tuned for more updates in the future!!

I wish people talked about this side of modifying more. New enthusiasts always think "horsepower better do that". And completely forget you can modify for longevity and reliability. Love it man :ok_hand:

I absolutely agree. While I love the power adding mods I really enjoy this type of modification that makes cars more reliable & ultimately make them last longer. These type of mods are more rewarding in my opinion and can be about performance too as ing mods.

Yeah man a lot of people don't think about these types of mods. Would definitely be a good write up.
